TOWSON, Md. – Towson University Athletics Director
Steve Eigenbrot announced that
Christie Rogers has been elevated to the position of associate head coach for Towson Tigers women's basketball.
Rogers returned to Towson athletics department in last June as a special assistant to the head coach and helped Towson to a 21-12 season and a share of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season title for the first time in program history. The 2022-23 Tigers reached the CAA title game and earned a second consecutive trip to the WNIT.
Rogers previously worked as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Towson for four seasons from 2012 through 2016. She has also served as an assistant coach at Coppin State (2021-2022), UMBC (2019-20), Radford (2016-2019) and Winthrop (2011-2012).
Rogers graduated from Washington College in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and was a starting point guard and captain of the women's basketball team for three years. She received her Master of Science in youth development leadership from Clemson University. She was a graduate assistant at Clemson during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 campaigns.
Rogers replaces Crystal Kelly, who accepted a position as assistant coach at the University of Kentucky. Kelly had been serving as interim head coach since May 19 with head coach
Laura Harper out until November 27 due to a personnel matter. Rogers will inherit that interim role.
In addition,
Ka'lia Johnson will be joining the Tigers' coaching staff as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
Johnson comes to Towson after spending the 2022-23 season at Richmond as an assistant coach. The Spiders went 22-11 last season and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.
Before Richmond, Johnson spent three seasons at Longwood helping the Lancers reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. During her tenure, the Lancers improved from 12 wins to 22 victories, earning a share of the Big South Conference regular season championship and winning the Big South Conference Tournament in 2021-22.
Johnson served as the video coordinator at VCU in 2018-19 and spent two seasons at UNC Greensboro as a graduate manager.
Johnson played collegiate basketball at Duke University, helping the Blue Devils win the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament championship, reach the Elite Eight in back-to-back years and finish with four consecutive 20-win seasons. The Blue Devils were 115-28 during her four seasons. During Johnson's senior season (2014-15), she averaged 7.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game as the starting point guard. She recorded the seventh triple-double in Duke history versus Old Dominion on Nov. 20, 2014, with 18 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds.
After Duke, she played professionally for two seasons. First in the Czech Republic for the BLK Slavia Praha where she averaged 19.4 points and a league-leading 10.5 rebounds per game. She then served as team captain for Alte Kanti Aarau in Switzerland before returning to the United States to begin her coaching career in August 2016.
Natasha Holloway will also join the staff as a special assistant to the head coach. She served as team manager for the women's basketball program until graduating in May 2023.
