TOWSON, Md. – Mike Larkin, head coach of the Towson University men's golf team, has officially announced the fall 2023 schedule.
"I'm looking forward to getting back on campus with the guys and continuing to build on the great work we've done these past few years," Larkin expressed. "I'm especially excited to get our freshmen on campus, get them integrated into what we do here, and see how they can take our formula and continue to push this program forward."
The Tigers are set to compete in four tournaments in three different states throughout September and October.
"From a scheduling standpoint, we've set this fall season up to feel a little less hectic than in past years," Larkin added. "We've only got four tournaments on the schedule and, probably most importantly, we have some more time built in at the beginning of the semester before we play our first event. That will give everyone a chance to really get settled in, and be better prepared for that first event, especially with six freshmen on the roster."
Three players from last year's roster are set to return for this upcoming season.
Brad Riley enters his fifth season with the Tigers after earning a stroke average of 74.09 and placing in the top-20 individually at four tournaments for the 2022-23 slate. His highest finish was at the Lehigh University Invitational (10/21-22/2022), where he led for the Tigers, placing fifth after rounds of 71-74. The Olney, Maryland native shot a season low 68 during the second round of The Doc Gimmler (9/10-11/2022). Rising sophomores
Poonyapat Nantsupawat and
Jai Sheth are the two underclassman returners. Nantsupawat played in seven tournaments for the Tigers, holding an average of 75.15 per round. The Florida native shot a season low 66 for his first round at The Doc Gimmler, where he finished 2-under par and tied for 22
nd overall. Sheth's freshman year highlights include a season low 69 earned during the second round of the PGA Works Collegiate Championship.
For the sixth consecutive season the Tigers will compete in The Doc Gimmler tournament, hosted by St. John's University in Farmingdale, New York from September 9-10. The 54-hole tournament takes place at the Bethpage State Park (Red Course). Towson saw a fourth place finish out of 15 teams at last year's event after rounds of 275-277-279, finishing 9-under.
"We go back to a very familiar event at St. John's to start our season," Larkin commented. "The Red Course at Bethpage is a golf course that we've played well at over the years, with a lot of memorable low rounds."
The Black & Gold then compete in the University of Connecticut Invitational, hosted in Hampden, Massachusetts from October 1-3. Action takes place on the 7,577 yard Par 72 Great Horse Course, home of the 2018 Massachusetts Open Championship.
"We've been fortunate enough to have been invited to UCONN's event – that was really a nice one to add to our schedule, and one that I know the guys are excited about," Larkin stated.
The season wraps up with the two tournaments that concluded the 2022 fall season for the team. Towson first heads up to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for the Bucknell Fall Invitational at the Bucknell Golf Course from October 8-10. The following week the Tigers participate in the Lehigh University Invitational at the Saucon Valley Country Club (Grace Course) on October 20 and 21. The team saw fifth place finishes at both events last year.
"Then we've got Bucknell and Lehigh on our schedule again, both places that we played last year, so there will be some familiarity with those two tournaments to round out our fall season." Larkin concluded.
