TOWSON, Md. – Sonia LaMonica, who served at the helm of Towson University women's lacrosse for 13 years and led the Tigers to four Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament titles, will leave Towson to become the new head women's lacrosse coach at the University of Virginia.
"UVA is getting an excellent coach and person in
Sonia LaMonica," said
Steve Eigenbrot, Towson University Director of Athletics. "Her hard work and reputation have put her in a position for this opportunity and we are extremely grateful for everything she's done for Towson and our student-athletes."
Since taking over the Towson program in the 2011 season, LaMonica, a five-time CAA Coach of the Year, led Towson to a 139-91 record, including 10 seasons with at least nine victories. Under her tenure, Towson won four CAA Tournament titles in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016 plus had five more CAA title game appearances. Towson earned seven NCAA Tournament appearances under LaMonica.
"It is a bittersweet moment," said LaMonica, who spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons as an assistant at Towson. "It has been an amazing journey. This is a people business and I built so many meaningful relationships over the many years and learned so much. I am so grateful to be able to be part of an amazing athletics department and to be able to work with great student-athletes and amazing families. It has been an absolute privilege."
Towson University will conduct a nationwide search for its next head coach.
"Towson's women's lacrosse program is a top program nationally. We are committed to continuing our investment in the program and look forward to finding a new leader to keep us on a national stage," Eigenbrot said.
