Jamal Gay has been selected as a semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy®, announced by the National Football Foundation (NFF) on Wednesday.
In its 34
th season, the Campbell Trophy®, according to the NFF's mission statement, recognizes an individual as the absolute best scholar-athlete in the nation for combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.
Gay joins fellow Tigers Aaron Grzymkowski (2020, 2021), Jake Ryder (2016), Yaky Ibia (2010) among others who have been honored as Campbell Trophy® semifinalists.
Gay is one of 201 semifinalists across all levels of college football, including one of 39 from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level.
In the classroom, he earned his undergraduate degree from Towson in May 2022 in business administration with a 3.69 grade point average and is currently working on his Master's Degree in marketing intelligence, currently having a 3.81 GPA in graduate school.
On the field, Gay is a starting linebacker for Towson, having 24 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass break-up through the first four games. In his Towson career, he has played in 39 games from 2018-23, earning 120 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss.
The NFF will announce finalists on Oct. 25, where all finalists will receive a postgraduate scholarship of $18,000. The Campbell Trophy® recipient, which will be announced in Las Vegas on Dec. 5, will have their scholarship increased to $25,000.
The Tigers head north to No. 14/17 New Hampshire for their next game on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m.
