LAKE WORTH, Fla. – The Towson University men's golf team wrapped up the Southern Invitational tournament in third place after posting its best score of the event for the third and final round. The Black & Gold dropped six strokes from their round two score, shooting a 282 which was backed by two athletes shooting in the 60s and three carding scores in the low 70s. Three Tigers finished in the top 15.
Towson had the lowest par 3 score average out of all eight teams, averaging 3.15 (+9) after 54 holes. The Tigers collected the second highest amount of pars and third highest amount of birdies, tallying 175 and 41 respectively.
Florida Atlantic University claimed the tournament title after shooting 269 for the final round, the lowest score of the event out of all three rounds, finishing with a combined 823 (-29). Six Owls finished in the top 10 including individual champion Max Sturdza who remained atop the field throughout all three rounds. Sturdza carded 63 for his final round which was the lowest 18-hole score of the tournament. He finished 16-under par.
Towson's top finisher was freshman
Michael Matheson, who shot an even-par 71 for his final round to tie for fifth overall. He recorded three birdies total, two of which were back-to-back. Matheson collected the second most number of pars for the tournament, earning 40 across 54 holes. With a 2.75 (-3) he also had the lowest par 3 average out of the entire field.
Brad Riley fired a 69 for his last 18 of the tournament, adding four birdies to his scorecard. Like Matheson, Riley was 2-under during his back nine after birdying two holes and parring the remaining seven.
Sky Aung carded a 69 as well for his last round, a six-stroke improvement from his previous round. The freshman shot the lowest 9-hole score out of all six Tigers for his back nine, notching three birdies and six pars to put him at 3-under par. His score matches his collegiate career low, set earlier this season at the Ross Collegiate Classic in March. Aung completed the tournament tied for 12
th.
Ariihau Faana shot 73 to wrap up play in 23
rd place. He was 1-over par for each nine and recorded three birdies total. Faana tied for having the most pars out of all 48 players, totaling 41 throughout three rounds.
Jai Sheth and
Joshua Galindo shot a pair of 75s to place 25
th and 27
th, respectively. Combined the two earned eight birdies, four apiece.
"This week was much better for us," head coach
Mike Larkin stated. "We cleaned up a lot of the mistakes we were making at Golden Horseshoe. This is much more like what we're capable of, and now we need to continue pushing forward from here. Some very impressive stuff from a young group, having four freshmen in the lineup."
