TOWSON, Md. – For the fourth consecutive season, Towson University gymnastics team head coach
Jay Ramirez was named Southeast Region Coach of the Year, announced by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) on Wednesday.
This is Ramirez's second post-season award of 2024 as he was named East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Coach of the Year last month.
Ramirez led the Tigers to their second consecutive EAGL Championship title and fourth consecutive NCAA Championship appearance after another record-breaking season.
The Black & Gold set a program record team score, hitting the 197 mark for the first time in program history with a 197.425 on February 23. Four meets later, the team reset the record with a 197.500 on March 15 before posting a third 197 for a dominant win at EAGL Championships. These results aided the program to the highest NQS in program history of 196.935 and the highest average of 196.234.
Along with claiming the championship title, Towson was also tabbed as the EAGL Regular Season Champion for the first time in program history after going undefeated in conference-designated meets. The Tigers ranked first in the conference on vault and bars, and second on beam and floor.
Ramirez helped bring out the team's depth, seeing 39 scores of 49.000 or better across all four events which breaks the previous record of 32 set last season. Towson posted 19 team event scores that ranked in the top-10 in program history and set new records on bars (49.525), beam (49.475) and floor (49.650).
The Tigers posted 57 career highs, 49 scores in the 9.9 range and collected 81 podium finishes. Nine routines received a perfect 10.0 from one judge from five different athletes spanning three events. The season wrapped up with two athletes being named WCGA All-Americans for the first time since 2000.
Towson is set to compete on Friday, April 5 at 1 p.m. in round two of NCAA Regionals in Gainesville, Florida against Utah, Michigan State and Maryland.
