COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Towson University tennis team completed the first tournament of 2024 fall season, wrapping up the three-day Bedford Cup hosted by the University of Maryland on Sunday afternoon.
"Overall, this was a really positive experience for us," head coach
Jamie Peterson stated. "Collectively, I feel like we made positive steps each day of the tournament.
Aubrey Carper,
Kiersten Tambe and
Jocelynn Ginsberg all made it to the finals with Aubrey winning and two close loses. Today we went 4-1 in doubles and 7-3 in singles, a great way to finish against the best DI colleges in the Mid-Atlantic area. We look forward to getting back at it next weekend, hosting our Fall Hidden Dual tournament."
Singles
In the west draw stage of flight four,
Ashira Murray and
Sania Suchinsky both won their matches. Murray defeated Loyola's Mia Matriccino in three sets. Murray claimed the second set 7-5 after loosing 6-3 in the first. The sophomore walked away with the win after defeating Matriccino in the tie breaker, 10-7. Suchinsky automatically earned the win for her match as Selah Stibbins of Howard dropped due to injury.
In flight six,
Kiersten Tambe competed against Venus Tang of Mount St. Mary's in the finals. The freshman took the first set win, 6-2 before Tang came back to win the second set with the same score. Tambe fought hard in the tiebreaker but ultimately fell 11-9 to Tang.
In the south draw stage of flight six, Chandre Boshoff won both sets against Stefania Moysiadi of Morgan State. Boshoff took both sets with scores of 6-4.
In the 3-4 playoff draw stage of flight seven,
Gaia Montecchi earned a win. She took Margherita Trolese to three sets, defeating her 11-9 in the tiebreaker.
In flight nine,
Aubrey Carper defeated Ryan McCarthy of Mount St. Mary's in dominant fashion. Carper swept McCarthy 6-0 in the first set and won the second 6-3. In the 3-4 playoff draw stage of the same flight,
Sofia Anderson won her match after her opponent withdrew due to injury.
Doubles
In the south draw stage of the blue doubles, Chandre Boshoff and
Gaia Montecchi were handed the automatic win after their opponents withdrew for injury.
In the southwest stage of the same section,
Olivia Rothfeld and
Kiersten Tambe swept their opponents from Mount St. Mary's 6-0.
In the south draw stage of the red doubles section,
Chloe Courtnage and
Sofia Anderson earned a win due to their opponents dropping out.
In the east draw stage of the green doubles section,
Sania Suchinsky and
Aubrey Carper fell to their opponents from Morgan State 6-1.
The team returns home next weekend to host a three-day tournament from September 20-22 at the Tiger Tennis Complex.
