Towson Tennis Tops Loyola 4-3

BALTIMORE - Towson University women's tennis team won its third match in five days defeating Loyola 4-3 in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon at the Ridley Athletic Complex. Since Saturday, the Tigers (9-9) beat Hampton, Monmouth and Loyola and lost to Stony Brook.

This is the third consecutive match between the schools, located three miles apart, that has ended 4-3. Towson won in 2023 and 2026 with Loyola emerging victorious last year.

Towson captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Afte Loyola won on court 2, the Tigers top team of Kiersten Tambe and Chandrè Boshoff winning 6-3 at No. 1. The duo has now won four straight matches and five of the last six. The visitors clinched the point after a come from behind 7-5 victory by Ashira Murray and Sania Suchinsky at No. 3. The duo trailed 5-4 then won the last three games of the set.

Loyola (2-9) took a 2-1 lead after straight set wins on courts 5 and 3.

Murray tied the score at 2-all with a victory at No. 4. The junior is now 13-4 this season, including a 6-4 record on court 4. She moved up in the lineup because Tamzin Pountney was out with an injury.

The matches on courts 1 and 2 ended simultaneously as the Greyhounds won at No. 1 and Tigers took the match at No. 2 as Gaia Montecchi downed Elena Hartley 6-4, 7-6. Last year, Hartley won in straight sets on the same court. Montecchi improved to 14-4 this season.

Suchinsky clinched the match moments later – beating Emi Shivkumar at No. 6 for the second consecutive year. The senior, who missed 12 matches this spring because of a battle with mononucleosis, improved to 13-5 lifetime on court 6.

"Another hard-fought win for TU," Towson head coach Jamie Peterson said. "We pulled through in another tight match. We got a clutch win from Ashira and Sania to take the doubles point and a lot of fight in singles. At one point in the opening set, we trailed in five of the six matches, but Gaia and Ashira rallied to win those sets."
