TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University tennis team competed in eight singles and two doubles matches against George Mason and Georgetown University on the second day of the Fall Tiger Classic Tournament. The Black & Gold wrapped up the evening with five total wins coming from four singles and one doubles.
"It was a long tough day for Towson, playing back-to-back matches today in humid conditions," head coach
Jamie Peterson commented. "Most of the matches were competitive. The day ended up on a really positive note when
Gaia Montecchi put her competitiveness on display as she roared back from a set down to win a three-hour match in a third set tiebreaker 10-5. It was her second singles win of the day."
Singles – George Mason
Kiersten Tambe competed in the No.1 spot, defeating Cenan Liu in two sets, 6-2 and 6-4.
Gaia Montecchi picked up the Tigers second singles win against the Patriots, nearly sweeping Noelle Talarek with scores of 6-1 for both sets.
Aubrey Carper took her opponent to three sets, taking the first win 6-3 before Lauren Splett responded with 6-7. In the tiebreaker, Carper claimed the win after defeating Splett 10-8.
Chloe Courtnage battled hard against Veda Prapurna but ultimately dropped her match against the Patriot 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Singles – Georgetown
Chandre Boshoff faced Emily Novikov, dropping her set to the sophomore 6-3 and 6-2.
Ashira Murray fell after two sets against Ashley Kennedy, 6-3 and 6-2.
Sania Suchinsky lost to Natasha Karvarana 6-1, 6-0.
Gaia Montecchi earned her second straight singles match of the day, defeating Molly Evans in three sets. The freshman fought back after loosing the first set 5-7, taking the second set 6-5. She ultimately claimed the match victory after winning the tiebreaker 10-5.
Doubles – George Mason
Chandre Boshoff and
Ashira Murray took on Brooklyn Siegel and Mary Young, fighting their way to three sets. The Tigers took the first set in 6-4 while the Patriots bounced back with the same score of 6-4 for the second. In the tiebreaker Boshoff and Murray fell 13-11.
Doubles – Georgetown
The duo of
Kiersten Tambe and
Olivia Rothfeld picked up the Black & Gold's lone doubles win of the day. The Tigers' dominantly defeated Katie Garofolo-Ro and Carolyn Schaefer in two sets, 6-4 and 6-2.
