ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Towson University women's tennis team wrapped up the final two days of the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational this past weekend.
"The team competed very well in a tournament with tough competition," head coach
Jamie Peterson commented. "Most of the singles matches that we lost were in superbreakers. Doubles were improved this weekend but still need to build our confidence in being aggressive."
Day Two
Singles
In the B flight,
Gaia Montecchi defeated Georgetown's Ashley Kennedy in the first round of the consolation bracket. Montecchi won the first set 6-4, then Kenndey retired due to injury in the second set. Montecchi advanced to the semifinals after receiving a bye in the quarterfinals. She will take on Villanova's Lauren Monti tomorrow.
Ashira Murray played Navy's Kate Lee in the first round of the consolation bracket in the same flight. Murray won the first set 7-5, then dropped the second set 7-5 and fell in the tiebreaking set 10-8.
In flight C, Chandre Boshoff advanced to the quarterfinals after her opponent defaulted. Boshoff then defeated Villanova's Amari O'Brien in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Boshoff will play Villanova's Madeline Hills in the semifinals.
Aubrey Carper battled against Isabelle May of Seton Hall 6-3, 1-6, 10-5.
Olivia Rothfeld lost to George Washington's Madison Lee 6-1, 6-2.
In flight D action,
Sania Suchinsky fell to Molly Evans of Georgetown 6-1, 6-1.
Chloe Courtnage picked up a straight victory in the flight E quarterfinals over Mount St. Mary's Emma Kaden, 6-1, 6-1. Courtnage will play Georgetown's Jordan Thomas in the semifinals tomorrow.
Sofia Anderson battled against Lehigh's Bella Peters in the quarterfinals, dropping the first 7-6, but won the second set 6-2. She dropped the tiebreaking set 10-7. Anderson advanced to the consolation bracket championship after her opponent defaulted. She will take on Audrey Harrington tomorrow.
Doubles
In the A flight,
Ashira Murray and
Tamzin Pountney took on Emma Perkins and Venus Tang of Mount St. Mary's in the quarterfinals. The Towson duo fell 6-1.
In the B flight,
Olivia Rothfeld and
Gaia Montecchi played Mary Bellia and Emma Gu of Navy. Rothfeld and Montecchi won 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. The Towson duo took on Villanova's Savarin Seebald and Maggie Gehrig, but fell 6-2 in the semifinals.
Chandre Boshoff and
Kiersten Tambe took on Carolyn Schaefer and Tatiana Zelenko of Georgetown today and fell 6-4.
In the C flight,
Aubrey Carper and
Sofia Anderson faced off against Valentine Mudry and Emma Kaden of Mount St. Mary's. The Towson duo dropped the match to the Mount duo. In the same flight,
Sania Suchinsky and
Chloe Courtnage played Hannah Letzer and Audrey Harrington of Lehigh. Suchinsky and Courtnage won the match 6-4. In the semifinals, Suchinsky and Courtnage took on Navy's Vanessa Popescu and Grace Li. The Towson duo dropped the match 6-0.
Day Three
Singles
In the consolation stage of the A flight,
Kiersten Tambe fought for three sets against Seton Hall's Imogen Brooker. The freshman took the first set 4-1 before Brooker responded 5-4. In the tiebreaker Tambe fell 10-6.
In the B flight consolation stage
Gaia Montecchi battled for three sets as well, falling 5-3 for the first set before responding with the same score for the second set to claim the win. The freshman ultimately fell to Villanova's Lauren Monti 10-4 in the tiebreaker.
In the E flight main draw stage,
Chloe Courtnage nearly swept her opponent Jordan Thomas of Georgetown 6-0 and 6-3.
"Big props to
Chloe Courtnage for winning her flight without dropping a set," Peterson continued. "She was mentally strong and played the big points well."
In the same flight's consolation final,
Sofia Anderson defeated Lehigh's Audrey Harrington after three sets. The freshman came back from a 4-1 loss for the first set, taking the second set 5-3. Anderson claimed the win after going 10-7 in the tiebreaker.
"Also, props to
Sofia Anderson for winning her backdraw," Peterson concluded.
Doubles
In the B flight
Olivia Rothfeld and
Gaia Montecchi fell to Maggie Gehrig and Savarin Seebald of Villanova 6-2.
