LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Towson University track & field team traveled to Pennsylvania on Saturday for the Gulden Invitational, hosted by Bucknell University. Junior Baara Stewart led the Tigers with a record-setting performance in the 1,000m, breaking a 39-year-old program record originally set by Maureen Shaneman in 1987.
Field Events
In the long jump, sophomore Aniyah Toppin recorded a 5.30m leap to place fourth for the Tigers.
Freshman Brunell Owusu earned a third-place finish in the pole vault after clearing 3.55m.
In the high jump, freshman Sierra Swangin tied for second overall with a clearance of 1.60m.
Freshman Jaylynn Dorsey placed fourth in the triple jump, posting a mark of 11.32m.
Track Events
In the 5000m, freshmen Anna Amato (18:30.19) and Skylar Pizzulli (18:30.69) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the 60m finals, senior Princess Asante captured gold for the Tigers with a time of 7.71, while freshman Kadidja Ouattara followed closely in second after clocking 7.75. Qiora Rollins placed fourth (7.77), Brianna Easley finished sixth (7.81) and Bianca Durant took seventh (7.84) after all three also qualified for the final.
In the 400m, Ouattara found fourth place with a time of 59.43. Senior Christal Pommells additionally secured a top ten finish in eighth place after posting 59.70.
Freshman Jaayah Jenkins ran 2:22.42 to place fifth overall in the 800m.
In the 1000m, Stewart reset the Towson record after shaving nearly two minutes off her previous personal best, clocking 2:53.54 to finish first at the meet. The record was previously held by Maureen Shaneman, who ran 2:55.10 in the event in 1987. Layla James also entered the all-time list in the event, posting a time of 3:03.73 to finish seventh at the meet and rank tenth all-time.
Five Tigers finished among the top 10 in the 200m, led by Nester Wea, who claimed first place with a time of 25.19. Mydison Britton followed in second (25.25), Spencer Settle placed third (25.51), Jasmine Scott took fourth (25.66) and Easley rounded out the top five with a time of 25.67.
In the 4x800m, Towson's "A" team consisting of Addison Mau, Jenkins, James and Stewart claimed first place with a combined time of 9:24.30. With two gold medal finishes from Stewart, the junior was recognized as the Gulden Invitational's MVP.

For their third consecutive meet, the Tigers will return to Pennsylvania from January 30-31 to compete at the Penn State Nationals, hosted by Pennsylvania State University.
