Mikey Weisshaar: Towson Men’s Lacrosse All-Time Leading Scorer

TOWSON, Md.- In the summer of 2022, Mikey Weisshaar arrived on campus as the No. 14 men's lacrosse recruit by Inside Lacrosse. The 5-foot-9 lightning-quick lefty will leave Towson University as the most prolific scorer in program history.

In Saturday's regular season finale versus Hofstra, Weisshaar passed Bob Griebe on the Towson all-time scoring list. Heading into Thursday's Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) semifinal matchup versus Monmouth, the Anne Arundel County product has 222 career points (149 goals, 73 assists), one more than Griebe (96g & 125a).

Earlier this season, Weisshaar joined Griebe and Glenn Smith as the only players with 200 or more points. Weisshaar, who has 23 career hat tricks and has scored at least two goals in 43 of his 59 career games, needs six goals to surpass Smith, who scored 154 times to go along with 55 assists.

Before the regular season finale, the Towson athletics department had a pre-game presentation, featuring the only players in the 69-year history of the program to reach 200 points. Weisshaar then went out and scored six goals with one assist to move into the top spot.

Griebe, who played for Team USA in the World Championships in 1978 and 1982, was the leading scorer on the Tigers' 1974 College Division National Championship team. Smith was a three-time All-American, helped Towson reach the 1991 championship game and scored the overtime goal to beat then-No. 1 Johns Hopkins in 1989, a victory that earned the Tigers their first trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament.

"It is a great honor to be in the same company with two of the players who helped pave the way," Weisshaar said. "I don't really think about it. I just go out there and do what I can to help the team win."

"Coming in, he was super talented with a lot of confidence and bravado, but the fun piece is him growing as a young man and development as a lacrosse player," Towson head coach Shawn Nadelen said. "He is so explosive with the ball in his stick. Mikey has really developed during his career and it has been fun to watch his appetite to want to get better."

Thirteen other players in the class of 2026 arrived on campus with Weisshaar. Ten of the 14 remain, including Ryan Schrier, a teammate of Weisshaar's since seventh grade – first for the Annapolis Hawks 2022 club team, that also included United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-Americans Dom Pietramala (North Carolina), Billy Dwan (Syracuse) and Alex Ross (Penn State) – then at Archbishop Spalding, where they led the Cavaliers to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) A Conference championship game as juniors. That spring, Weisshaar was named the C. Markland Kelly Award winner as the best player in Maryland after scoring 48 goals with 23 assists.

"Mikey has grown a lot in the last 10 years. It has been a pleasure playing with him," Schrier said. "Obviously he is a great player, but I think the thing biggest thing he has done since we have been here is focusing more on the team and making everyone around him better."

After earning CAA All-Rookie honors in 2023, Weisshaar had a breakout sophomore season becoming the first Towson player to be Inside Lacrosse First Team All-America since 2019 after scoring 42 goals with 19 assists as the Tigers captured the conference championship and earned a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Early in his junior campaign, Nadelen and offensive coordinator Matt Musci moved Weisshaar from midfield to attack. He finished the season with 48 goals and 24 assists, was named CAA Offensive Player of the Year and earned All-America Third Team recognition at attack by Inside Lacrosse, USILA and USA Lacrosse.

"We have asked him to do a lot of different things – first as a midfielder then transitioning to an attackman," Musci said.  "When we made the move, he had to take a step back and realize what he was good at, what he wasn't good at and learn the intricacies of being at attackman. Having to play without the ball and getting your teammates involved. It took some time because it wasn't as easy as he thought. But he took the time to watch film and took to the coaching. He has evolved from an X attackman facilitator who can dodge from anywhere on the field and continue to get his teammates involved along the way."

The Preseason CAA Player of the Year has 42 goals and 22 assists this season and was selected as one of the 25 Tewaaraton Trophy nominees for the second season as Towson attempts to capture its third consecutive CAA crown. Towson (10-3, 6-0 CAA) enters Thursday's semifinal on an eight-game winning streak and has 24 consecutive conference victories. The class of 2026 has a 40-22 career record, a 64.5 percent winning percentage.

"Chemistry matters – both on and off the field," Nadelen said. "The way the locker room handles itself comes from the senior class and how tight those guys are. Each brings their own personalities, leadership qualities and ability to follow. They are about the right things that we want to be as a program."

Weisshaar will be headed to the professional ranks after the 2026 college season after being selected second overall in the first round of the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) Draft by the Boston Cannons on April 14.

"It is an honor and privilege to be playing at the next level." Weisshaar added. "But right now, my main focus is finishing strong at Towson. I am so excited to see what we can do. This team is different than the last two. We have meshed and have the motto LMB for Love My Boys. Our chemistry is sky high now."
