Blumer Leads Tigers to 2nd Straight Win

OWINGS MILLS, Md. ? Led by two goals from freshman midfielder Kristie Blumer (Magruder H.S./Rockville, Md.), the Tigers (3-3) earned their second straight win, a 5-2 non-conference victory over the University of Richmond (1-7) at Villa Julie College Field on Sunday morning.

The win snapped the Tigers' seven-game losing streak against the Spiders, dating back to the 1997 season. “It felt really great to score the two goals today,” Blumer said of her first career multi-goal effort. “We had a great practice yesterday, especially with our movement drills and we came out today and played well.”

Senior forward Kajee Murangi (Springbrook H.S./Chevy Chase, Md.) gave the Tigers a quick 1-0 lead at the 5:25 mark when she deflected a shot by sophomore forward Christina Boarman (St. Paul's School/Fulton, Md.) for her sixth goal of the season. Just over a minute later, Blumer tallied her first goal of the game by putting in a rebound of a shot by Boarman, upping the Tiger advantage to 2-0.

Junior Alex Malatesta (Gwynedd Mercy Academy/North Wales, Pa.) cut the Richmond deficit to 2-1 with 21:50 remaining in the first half when she scored her second goal of the season, an unassisted marker past senior goalkeeper Michelle Cheek (Ocean City H.S./Marmora, N.J.). With 15:39 left in the half, sophomore forward Megan Thompson (Pequea Valley H.S./Gap, Pa.) deflected a shot by senior Tara Kelly (Villa Maria Academy/Bryn Mawr, Pa.) past Cheek for her second goal of the season, which tied the game at 2-2.

However, the Tigers scored three straight goals to earn the victory. Blumer recorded her second goal of the game at the 22:23 mark on an unassisted marker by scoring on a rebound on a Boarman shot which hit the post.

With 22:51 left in the second half, the Tigers extended their lead to 4-2 when junior midfielder Laura Schnell (C. Milton Wright H.S./Bel Air, Md.) scored the first goal of her college career, an unassisted marker past goalkeeper Becca Weaver (Manheim Township H.S./Lancaster, Pa.).

Boarman gave the Tigers a three-goal lead when she scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season with 16:50 remaining.

“We executed everything really well today and played great for 70 minutes,” Towson Coach Michelle Webber said. “Everyone that stepped on the field did a great job and executed what we needed to in order to get the win.”

Cheek made three saves before being replaced by freshman goalkeeper Whitney Clugston (Manheim Central H.S./Manheim, Pa.) with 5:35 remaining.

Weaver made 14 saves in the loss for the Spiders, who were outshot by a 33-6 margin.

It was the Spiders' seventh straight loss.
