OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Kathleen Shea's goal came just 23 seconds into overtime and lifted #12 Old Dominion to a 2-1 win over the Tigers on Sunday morning in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Tigers (3-8, 0-4 CAA) had tied the score early on Blythe Mackie's goal.
"Once again, I thought we really battled hard against one of the top ranked teams in the nation," said Coach Michelle Webber. "Our defense played tough but we were unable to capitalize on our opportunities."
Old Dominion got on the board first as Kathryn Kirk scored off an assist from Stephanie Kratzer in the 7th minute. The Tigers got the equalizer in the 25th minute as Mackie scored off an assist from Tabi Hatch. The two teams went into the half tied at 1-1 with Old Dominion holding a 6-2 advantage in shots.
Both teams had their opportunities in the second half but neither was able to find the back of the net. The Lady Monarchs had a 6-2 advantage in shots in the second half as well.
Heading into overtime, the Lady Monarchs took advantage of an early opportunity as Shea was able to score the game-winner off an assist from Kirk.
Old Dominion finished the game with a 13-4 advantage in shots and 6-4 edge in corners.
Jamie Dowling matched her career-high with seven saves in goal for the Tigers. Kelly Driscoll made one save to earn the win in goal.
Towson returns to action when it travels to Boston on October 9 to face Northeastern at 2 p.m. The Tigers will look to snap a four-game losing streak when they face the Huskies.
