CHANDLER, Az. ? Led by four-year award winner Danielle Wacker, the Tigers had 15 players named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, it has been announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
The NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad honors collegiate field hockey players who earned a 3.30 grade point average or higher during the fall 2008 semester. The 15 players recognized this year are the most in program history for the Tigers. In the last seven years, the Tigers have had 11 or more players named to the squad four times.
Towson was one of nine programs to have 15 or more honorees on this year's squad. In addition, the Tigers were one of 60 programs to be recognized with a Team Academic Award for having a team G.P.A above 3.00 during the fall semester.
Wacker, a nursing major, earned a spot on the academic squad each year during her Tiger career. Maureen Meara, a business administration major was also a four year selection to the squad.
Fellow seniors Stephanie Kisic and Laura Schnell earned a spot on the academic squad for the third time in their careers. Juniors Christina Boarman and Ellen Meara were also honored for the third time in their careers.
Junior Mariah Schuette along with sophomores Kristie Blumer and Brooke Smith earned a spot on the academic squad for the second time in their careers.
Freshman Robin Fencel, Samm McElvaney, Jamie Salvador, Kim Schnell, Jo Ellen Sumego and Alicia Vincenty were honored for the first time.
The Tigers, who fell to Old Dominion in the first round of the CAA Tournament finished the year 11-9. They tied the school record for wins in a season and broke the school record for goals in a season. Towson returns four of its top five scorers next season.
