Tigers Fall to California 1-0 in Opener

BERKELEY, Calif. - A second half goal proved to be the difference as the University of California defeated the Tiger field hockey team 1-0 in the season opener for both teams. Jamie Dowling made three saves in her first career start in goal for the Tigers (0-1).

"I thought we did some things well for being a young team in their first game of the season," said Coach Michelle Webber. "Jamie made some key saves for us tonight and hopefully we can make build on tonight's outcome and make some changes  for tomorrow."

The two teams combined for six shots in the first 35 minutes of play but neither side could find the back of the net. Towson had the only penalty corner in the half but was unable to convert.

Just 2:03 into the second half, Cal was able to convert on a penalty corner in what would prove to be the only goal of the game. Erin Magill scored her first goal of the season off assists from Deanna Kennedy and Jessica Kreck.

Maddie Hand and Haleh Nourani split time in net for the Golden Bears and made one save apiece. Dowling had three saves in goal for the Tigers.

Christina Boarman had four shots for the Tigers.

The Tigers continue their West Coast swing on Saturday, August 29 when they face Pacific at Berkeley at 7 p.m. east coast time.
