RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Commonwealth got a pair of goals from Rachel Krumm to help defeat the Tigers 5-1 on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association play. Katie DeFilippo scored for the Tigers (3-6, 0-2 CAA) in the loss.
"We had our opportunities to score but was unable to finish," said Coach Michelle Webber. "We have the potential to do well in this league but we need to find a way to come out strong in each contest."
VCU grabbed an early lead in the 13th minute as Krumm scored off an assist from Hannah Lyerly and Flore van Dessel. The Rams added to the lead in the 22nd minute as Chelsea Hill scored an unassisted tally. VCU held a 5-4 advantage in shots in the first 35 minutes of play.
Krumm struck for her second tally of the game in the 41st minute. Lyerly and van Dessel assisted on the goal for their second assists of the game. Kelsey Scherrer scored an unassisted goal in the 50th minute before assisting on Marle van Dessel's goal in the 55th minute.
Towson got on the scoreboard in the 61st minute as DeFilippo scored her second goal of the season.
Jamie Dowling made two saves in goal for the Tigers while Whitney Clugston made one save in relief action. Megan Botteri made eight saves in goal for the Rams to earn the win.
Towson held a 17-14 advantage in shots while they also had a 10-5 advantage in shots.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, October 2 when they make their home debut for the 2009 season. Towson hosts William & Mary at 7 p.m.
