COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Redshirt freshman Christina Siwiec made seven saves but it was not enough as the Towson University field hockey team fell at #3 Maryland, 6-0 on Wednesday evening. The Tigers (8-8) were playing their final non-conference game of the year.
Ali McEvoy got the scoring started for Maryland (13-2) with a goal in the 16th minute as the Terps were awarded a penalty corner. Jill Witmer added an unassisted tally in the 25th minute for the Terps.
In the 32nd minute, Maryland would score its third goal of the half as Lindsey Puckett scored her first goal of the season.
Maryland would score three more times in the second half for the final margin of victory in the game. Maxine Fluharty and Katie Gerzabek scored in the 37th and 41st minutes respectively.
The Terps got their final goal in the 59th minute as Danielle Kauffman scored her first career goal off an assist from Puckett.
Melissa Vassalotti and Natalie Hunter each played a half in goal for the Terps and neither player was forced to make a save. In addition to the saves from Siwiec, the Tigers got a defensive save from freshman Rebecca Chmielewski in the contest.
Maryland finished the game with a 23-1 advantage in shots. Senior Katie DeFilippo had the Tigers' shot in the game. The Terps also held a 10-3 edge in penalty corners.
The Tigers, who are currently in the hunt for a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament, will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 23. Towson travels to Delaware for a noon contest.
