Tigers Fall to Radford, 3-1

FARMVILLE, Va. - Janine Kovach scored a goal but it was not enough as the Towson University field hockey team fell to Radford, 3-1 in the season opener for both teams.

"We struggled at times today," said Coach Michelle Webber. "The team needs to continue working hard and make some adjustments."

The Tigers found themselves down early as Radford tallied two first-half goals in the game. Just 1:17 into the game, Courtney Poole collected a short cross from Madonna Wadolowski and banged it home.  The Highlanders added to their lead in the 19th minute as Marlee Schramm tallied an unassisted goal.

Radford outshot the Tigers 6-3 in the first 35 minutes of play and held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners during that half.

Kovach got the Tigers on the board in the 38th minute as Towson was awarded a penalty corner. Kovach's goal was assisted by Kim Schnell and Katie DeFilippo.

Radford would add one more goal in the game as Ashton Cox scored off an assist from Lynsey Daughtrey.

The Highlanders outshot the Tigers 11-4 in the second half and held a 17-7 advantage for the game. Radford also finished the game with a 13-5 edge in penalty corners.

Christina Siwiec made her first career start in goal for the Tigers and finished with six saves. Sidney Encarnacion recorded six saves for Radford in the game.

Towson returns to action on Saturday, August 27 when it faces Longwood in an 11:00 a.m. contest.
