TOWSON, Md. – Junior Toni Popinko scored two goals and added an assist as the University of Delaware (7-10, 3-3) won its third straight game, a 4-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Tigers (1-16, 0-5) on Sunday afternoon at Minnegan Field at Johnny Unitas® Stadium.

With the win, the Blue Hens ruined Towson's Senior Day and earned a berth in the CAA Tournament.

After the teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 40 minutes of action, freshman Allie Mikelson scored the first goal of the game off a penalty corner. She took a pass just inside the circle from senior Carley Hecht and drilled a 14-yard shot past Towson goalkeeper Tashani Dickson.

Several minutes later, Mikelson preserved the shutout when she made a defensive save on a shot by Megan Penza off a penalty corner.

With 20 minutes left in regulation, Popinko got free in front of the cage and scored off a pass from junior Clare O'Malley to give the Blue Hens a 2-0 lead.

Delaware broke the game open by scoring twice in the final minutes. With 5:51 remaining, Hecht scored off a pass from Popinko off a scramble in front of the cage. Only 28 seconds later, Popinko scored an unassisted goal to give the Blue Hens a 4-0 lead.

“Defensively, we played well in the first half,” said Coach Michelle Webber. “But there are still some things we need to clean up moving forward. Offensively, we need to play smarter.”

The Tigers' five seniors were honored in pre-game ceremonies. Kasie Nurko, Ashlea Carl, Janine Kovach, Kate Nolan and Penza all played in their final home game.

“All of our seniors will be missed,” said Coach Webber. “They contributed in all facets during their careers, including academically.”

The Tigers return to action on Friday, October 26 when they visit Hofstra for a 3:00 p.m. game.
