COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A late offensive flourish by the Davidson Wildcats (2-0) gave them their second straight win to start the season, edging the Towson Tigers by a 2-1 final score on Saturday at the Maryland Field Hockey Complex.
Towson (0-2) and the Wildcats were scoreless for over 60 minutes to begin the game. But both offenses enjoyed a late push and pressured the opposing defenses, finally breaking a scoreless tie when Davidson's Anna Davis scored her first goal of the season off of a penalty corner, served in from Tyler McFayden. The goal, scored with 9:17 remaining in the second half, was the first goal allowed by Towson goalkeeper Brittany Varacallo after facing Davidson 22 shots in the first half.
Then, with 2:49 to play, the Wildcats' Melissa Funsten scored another penalty corner goal and gave her team a seemingly secure 2-0 lead.
However, Funsten's goal proved to be the game-winner, as Towson's Courtney Branco netted her first goal of the season on an odd-man rush. She converted a shot past Davidson goalkeeper Carolyn Macek, pulling the Tigers to within a 2-1 margin with less than 90 seconds to play.
Branco, a senior, was the team's leading scorer last season with six goals and 15 points.
Davidson outshot the Tigers 29-8 for the game, though Towson allowed just seven Wildcat shots in the second half. The team made the necessary adjustments to slow down a potent Davidson attack, while increasing its offensive tempo and taking six shots in the final period.
Davis had a game-high eight shots, while Kelly Mattingly led Towson with three shots, an assist and a defensive save.
Varacallo was outstanding for the Tigers, making 12 saves. The junior has 21 saves in her first two games of the season.
Macek made five saves in the victory.
The Tigers return to College Park, Md., for their second consecutive neutral site game on Friday, facing Georgetown at 7 p.m.
