UPDATING THE TIGERS: The Towson University field hockey team starts the weekend on the road at Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) on Friday and Saint Joseph's on Sunday. The Tigers (1-3) look to rebound from a 1-0 home loss against Lehigh on Sunday. Freshman Sam Zelenack leads the team with two goals and four points, while junior Kelly Mattingly has taken a team-best 12 shots.
VCU SERIES HISTORY: The matchup between Towson and the Rams will be the 18th all-time between the teams. VCU holds a 12-5 lead in the series and defeated Towson last season by a score of 4-1. However, the Tigers' most recent win against the Rams was in 2011 on the road, as they upended VCU, 3-1.
SCOUTING THE RAMS: VCU has a 1-2 record on the year and returns home from a West Coast trip to Pacific and Stanford. The Rams defeated Pacific, 4-2, but fell to Stanford, 2-0. The team has also suffered a setback to William & Mary in VCU's season opener on September 1. Friday will be the Rams' first home game of the season.
SAVING THE DAY: Junior goalkeeper Brittany Varacallo, a transfer from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, has made her mark as a one of top goalies in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). She ranks first in the league with a save percentage of .765, is third in total saves with 26 and is one of only four goalies in the CAA with a goals-against average lower than 1.85 (1.81). Varacallo has played every minute of the season in net for Towson.
SAVOR THE MOMENT: The Tigers' 3-2 win over Georgetown on September 6 was a special memory for the Tigers and their coaching staff. It marked the first career win for Tiger head coach Carly Powell, in her first season as a head coach. Prior to her arrival at Towson, Powell was an assistant coach at West Chester for two seasons, helping the Golden Rams to the Division II National Championship in 2011 and 2012.
