TOWSON, Md. – Towson field hockey goalkeeper
Tessa Scheenstra has been named the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career after her performances against Lock Haven and Sacred Heart, the CAA announced Monday. She is the first Towson CAA Defensive Player of the Week since Lena Vandam in 2021.
Scheenstra earned two wins this past weekend playing every second of the Tigers 5-1 win over the Bald Eagles and 3-1 victory against the Pioneers. The senior finished with seven saves against Lock Haven and stopped 13 Sacred Heart shots, the most in a game by a CAA goalie so far this season. Through both games Scheenstra saved 20 of the 22 shots on goal that she faced.
The Voorburg, Netherlands native was named to the Preseason All-CAA Team and to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association D-I Watchlist ahead of this season after a junior year that saw her post career highs in both save percentage (.712) and goals allowed per game (1.92) and helped Towson to its best record since 2011. She recorded her 300
th career save on October 27 against Lafayette.
