TOWSON, Md. - Looking for its second consecutive win, the Towson University field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to Lehigh (1-3) on Sunday at Unitas Stadium.
The Tigers (1-3) fell behind the Mountain Hawks early, as Marissa Glatt got Lehigh on the board just over seven minutes into the game. Glatt took a pass from Zoey Pacheco and got in close, firing a shot past Tiger goalkeeper Brittany Varacallo.
For the second straight contest, the Tigers recorded more shots than their opposition as a strong second half output gave the team a 14-13 shot advantage. The Tigers had 10 shots in the second half, peppering Lehigh goalie Julia Ward. The 10 second half shots were the most in a half for the Tigers this season and the 14 shots tied a season-high.
Ward was strong in the net for Lehigh, making seven saves in the shutout.
However, Towson had chances in the second half and was able to increase the pace of the game by generating offensive chances. Senior Kate Williams had a tremendous chance to tie the score with around 24 minutes to play, but her shot sailed just wide to the right of the Lehigh goal. Then, with around nine minutes remaining, the Tigers got in close and attempted two quick shots, but Ward and the Mountain Hawk defense was able to withstand the charge.
Heather Jenney and Kelly Mattingly were forces on the offensive end for Towson, as both players had four shots each to tie for the game-high.
Varacallo made four saves for Towson.
The Tigers begin a six-game road trip on Friday, facing VCU in Richmond, Va., at 6 p.m.
