TOWSON, Md. - The Towson women's soccer team returns home to host a pair of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) contests, beginning with UNC Wilmington on Friday, Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. and concluding with College of Charleston on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
The Tigers (3-7-2, 0-3 CAA) are coming off a pair of CAA road losses at Northeastern and Hofstra. Towson was shut out of both matches. Senior goalkeeper
Erin Quinn made 10 saves on the weekend. Senior
Katie Ponce's three goals and seven points lead the Tigers, while freshman
Gabby Scirica and sophomore
Natalia Pinkney are tied in second place in scoring with two goals and six points each.
Against UNC WilmingtonThe Seahawks (6-6-1, 1-3 CAA) lead this series 11-2. The teams have played two OT games; the Tigers are 1-1 in those contests. In 2010 Towson fell, 2-1, while in 2011 they won, 1-0. That win was Towson's first in the series since the opening game in 1994 (2-0).
UNCW is coming off a 2-0 win over Elon on Oct. 5 that snapped a three-match losing streak and a string of four matches without a win. Katrina Guilliou and Serenity Waters lead the Seahawks with six goals apiece. Lindsey Byrne's four assists are a team best. Goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy has started 10 of 11 matches and has a goals-against average of 1.53 and 47 saves.
Last Time Out - Katlyn Axenfeld and
Emily Banes teamed up on a goal for the third time in 2013, but the Tigers dropped a 2-1 decision at UNC Wilmington on Oct. 5, 2013. The Tigers succumbed to their tendency to allow goals early; however, Towson was able to level it at one apiece for almost 20 minutes before UNCW scored the eventual game winner just three minutes before the half. UNCW scored early, as Maddie McCormick tallied her fifth of the season at 4:43. She capitalized on a clearing miscue. Axenfeld equalized in the 24th minute on a header from five yards out on a cross from Banes. The score stayed knotted at 1-1 until Katrina Guillou put the Seahawks back in front with a goal just before halftime.
Against College of CharlestonThe series began last season when the College of Charleston (5-8, 1-3 CAA) joined the league. Towson won the match 2-1 in Charleston, South Carolina.
Mary Kate Bowers has scored five goals on the year to lead the Cougars. Sarah Cardamone leads the College of Charleston with four assists. Lauren Killian has started nine of 13 games and has a GAA of 1.39 and 52 saves. CofC has won just one of its last four matches, a 3-1 decision over Elon at home on Oct. 3.
Last Time Out - Second-half goals from
Emily Banes and
Hollie Garber fueled a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the College of Charleston on Oct. 6, 2013 at Patriots Point Athletic Complex. The Cougars' Michaela Herman scored first, and they held a 1-0 lead at the break. It marked the sixth time in 2013 Towson allowed opponents to score first. But the Tigers rallied and posted goals five minutes apart late in the game for the win.
