BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Towson University women's tennis team earned a singles victory but it was not enough as they fell to West Virginia University by a score of 6-1 on Friday evening. Freshman
Nicole Shakhnazarova had the lone point for the Tigers in singles play.
Â
"This was a tough loss to a Big 12 team," Head Coach
Doug Neagle said. "If you look at the scores and across the board, we were right in it. Experience will help us to get the critical points that were won by WVU today. Nicole was fearless again tonight in her play as she picked up another very solid win."
Â
Shakhnazarova recorded Towson's only point of the day as she defeated the Mountaineers'
Ikttesh Chahal 7-5, 7-5.
Â
Lucy Williams and
Renate van Oorschodt both suffered close losses in singles play. Williams dropped the first set 6-4 against
Lyn Yuen Choo before battling back and forcing the second set to go to a tiebreaker that she couldn't capitalize on, 7-6 (4).
Â
van Oorschodt won the first set against
Yvon Martinez 6-4 before dropping the second set 3-6 and getting defeated in the third set tiebreaker 10-5.
Â
Williams and Shakhnazarova gave the Mountaineers' a tough run in doubles play before surrendering a 6-4 outcome against West Virginia's pairing of
Hailey Barrett and Chahal.
Â
The Tigers will stay in Blacksburg to face California University of Pennsylvania in a neutral site match tomorrow at 4 p.m.
