TOWSON, Md. – The Towson women's tennis program travels to Elon for the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship, which runs April 21-24. The sixth-seeded Tigers will take on No. 3 James Madison in quarterfinal action on Friday, April 22 at 3:45 p.m. The match, orginially scheduled to be held at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, was moved to the nearby Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center due to forecasted weather.
William & Mary are the top-seeded team for the conference tournament, followed by Elon and James Madison. College of Charleston picked up the No. 4 seed while UNCW was seeded fifth. The sixth-seeded Tigers are followed by Drexel, Hofstra and Delaware to round out the competitors.
Towson finished its season with a 13-8 overall record and was 3-4 in conference play. The Tigers' record was their best overall record since the 2010-11 season when Towson finished 14-8.
Nicole Shakhnazarova and
Lucy Williams were named Second Team All-CAA Singles, while
Renate van Oorschodt earned a spot on the conference's All-Academic team.
Shakhnazarova posted a 16-10 record this season, including a 7-4 record at the top singles spot. She led the Tigers in doubles action, partnering with
Barbora Vasilkova for a 14-10 record. Williams split time between the top two singles spots, recording a 16-14 record and leading the Tigers with four conference singles wins. van Oorschodt went 15-9 in singles action while combining with
A.J. Gomer for a 10-7 doubles record.
James Madison went 16-6 and 5-1 in conference play this season. The Dukes placed four on the All-CAA Teams, led by Timea Guibe who was honored twice. Guibe and doubles partner Kimmy Herrock earned a spot on the All-CAA Doubles Second Team. In addition, Guibe and Rachel Nelson received Second Team singles honors. The Dukes' Dylan Owens was named to the All-Academic team.
With a win against James Madison, the Tigers would advance to the semifinals to play the winner of No. 2 Elon and No. 7 Drexel. The semifinals would take place on Saturday, April 23 at 2 p.m. The title match is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 24.
