TOWSON, Md. – A competitive field awaits the Towson University men's golf team in its season-opening tournament in the Nutmeg State.
The Tigers head to Bull's Ridge Golf Club to compete in the seventh annual Hartford Hawks Golf Invitational. The 6,992-yard, 72-par course is located in South Kent, a village located in
Litchfield County,
Connecticut, alongside the New York border.
Along with Towson, this year's field for the 54-hole tournament features Bethune-Cookman, Bryant, Cal-Poly, Central Florida, UConn, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Fordham, Hartford, Hofstra, Holy Cross, LIU, Rhode Island, Rider, Sacred Heart, Sam Houston State, Seton Hall and St. John's.
A three-round event, both days begin with 8 a.m. shotgun starts. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
The Tigers had a solid showing at last season's event, finishing third overall after a three-round total of 867 (+3). Towson also had two athletes place among the top 10 in
Jimmy Grem (seventh, 211 -5) and
Michael Chanaud (tied for ninth, 215 -1).
Grem will be back in action this weekend for the Tigers. Competing for Towson along with Grem will be
Dylan Stein,
Nicholas Smearman,
John Hulede and
Juan Veloza.
"We're excited to get the season started," Hulede said. "We've been waiting for this all summer and all of us played well over the summer. We're looking good and we're hoping to have a great season. With help from our assistant coach
Jeff Castle, we've worked on simplifying things so that when we get to tournaments and qualifying in practice, we don't have many thoughts in our head and we can just think about reacting to the target rather than certain scores to shoot for."
For Towson, this is the first of five fall tournaments. The Tigers return to action on Sunday and Monday when they compete in the George Mason Patriot Invitational. By the time, the Tigers depart Virginia on Monday, they will have played in tournaments 334 miles apart, in seven days.
