No. 7 Towson to Face No. 2 Elon in CAA Quarterfinal Match

ELON, N.C. – The Towson University women's tennis team begins postseason action when it travels to Elon for the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship, which runs April 20-23. The seventh-seeded Tigers will take on the host No. 2 Phoenix in quarterfinal action on Friday, April 21 at 1 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
CAA Tournament Details
The tournament kicks off with a first round match between No. 8 Drexel and No. 9 Hofstra on Thursday, April 20. Quarterfinal action kicks off with two matches at 9 a.m. and the following two matches at 1 p.m. The Tigers and Phoenix will square off in the second round of quarterfinal matches at 1 p.m.
 
Saturday will consist of two semifinal matches played at 10 a.m. and the women's championship will take place at 10 a.m. on Sunday. All matches for the women's tournament are scheduled to be played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Elon's campus.
 
The winner of the No. 2 Elon and No. 7 Towson match will advance to play the winner of No. 3 College of Charleston and No. 6 UNCW on Saturday at 10 a.m.
 
The CAA Tournament is open to the public and there is no charge for admission. Live stats will be available for all tournament matches.
 
In case of inclement weather, the matches will be moved to the Peidmont Indoor Tennis Center and the Starmount Forest Country Club, both located in Greensboro, North Carolina.
 
Updating the Tigers
Towson finished the regular season with a 13-10 overall record and a 3-4 mark in conference play.
 
The Tigers have six players with double-digit singles wins this season. Lucy Gloninger leads Towson with a 22-5 overall record and an impressive team-best 16-3 mark in dual match play. Lucy Williams closed out the regular season on a high note, winning four-straight to improve to 16-13 overall and 14-8 in dual play. Williams has split most of her time between the No. 2 (6-2) and No. 3 (7-6) flights and was elevated to the top spot for the Tigers' final regular season match, a 6-2, 6-0 win against Coppin State.
 
Singles play is proving to be critical to the Tigers' success this season. Towson is 81-53 (60.4%) in dual singles this season while just 35-29 (53.8%) in dual doubles play.
 
A.J. Gomer and Renate van Oorschodt lead doubles action for the Tigers at 15-10 on the season and 12-8 in dual match play at the top flight.                                            
                                                                         
Previewing the Phoenix
Elon earned the No. 2 seed after finishing the season with a 17-7 overall record and going 4-1 in CAA play. The Phoenix have impressed on their home courts this season, posting a 13-1 record at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
Elon has six players with double-digit singles wins, led by Erica Braschi and Olivia Lucas at the top flights. Braschi holds a 14-8 record at No. 1 singles, while Lucas is 14-6 in dual play, splitting most of her time between the No. 2 (7-2) and No. 3 flights (5-2).
 
Braschi and Lucas also highlight the Phoenix's doubles play with a 14-6 record, splitting time between the second and third flights.
 
Series History
This will be the fourth meeting between the Tigers and Phoenix and the second in the CAA Quarterfinals. Towson fell 6-1 at Elon in February to open the spring season. The Tigers won the top two doubles flights to secure the doubles point but the Phoenix rebounded in singles play, winning all six matches.
 
The Tigers and Phoenix faced off in 2016 in a neutral site match that Elon won 4-0 after the match was called early due to inclement weather.
 
The two teams met for the first time in series history in the 2015 CAA Quarterfinals when Elon earned a 4-0 win over the Tigers.
 
CAA Tournament History
This will be the second year in a row that the conference tournament takes place at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Elon's campus. Top seeded William & Mary, which is ranked No. 48 nationally by the International Tennis Association (ITA), is seeking its third-straight conference title. The Tribe have won 24 of the past 32 CAA championships.
 
Towson is looking for its first win at the CAA Tournament since a 4-1 decision over Drexel in the First Round of the 2007 Championship. This is the fifth-straight year that the Tigers have qualified for the quarterfinals and the fourth time in program history that they are seeded seventh.
 
The Tigers have won five matches at the conference tournament in program history with all five coming in the tournament's first round.
 
Towson and Elon have only met once in the CAA Tournament when the Phoenix earned a 4-0 sweep over the Tigers in the 2015 Quarterfinals.
