TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University women's tennis team returns to action for the first time in 14 days when the Tigers make the trip up to Annapolis on Sunday to take on Navy beginning at 2 p.m., inside the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.
Towson (1-1) is coming off a 7-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's on January 27 at Baltimore Fitness & Tennis where the team honored tennis humanitarian and Baltimore native Sol Schwartz.
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Navy coach Keith Puryear," said head coach
Jamie Peterson. "Before Navy, he was the men's and women's coach at UMBC and last year, he earned his 600th career win. We played against him when I played at Towson from 1991-95 and he was Sol Scwhartz's college coach and close friend."
Prior to the Tigers' match against Mount St. Mary's, Peterson read a letter from Puyear honoring Schwartz because he could not be there since the Midshipmen were playing Old Dominion.
Towson has never beaten Navy in seven previous meetings, dropping last year's match at home, 6-1, on Apr. 15, 2017. Senior Barbora Vasilkova picked up a win at No. 3 doubles while senior
Lucy Williams earned the team's lone point with a 63-62 win over Josie Rogers at No. 2 singles.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for us and we are ready to do battle," said head coach
Jamie Peterson. "We know they are a disciplined and smart team. They will not beat themselves. However, this year, we have the confidence and belief to win."
Another thing working in the Tigers' favor will be the fact that Navy will be playing in their second match of the day on Sunday and its third in three days. The Midshipmen lost to James Madison on Friday, 4-3, and play Villanova at 10 a.m., Sunday morning.
Earlier this season, the two teams had some competition at Navy's Blue and Gold Invitational hosted in October. In singles, senior
A.J. Gomer went posted a 6-2, 7-5 win over Josie Rogers before falling to Navy's Carlee Conway, 7-6(1), 6-2. Junior
Lucy Gloninger lost to Catalina Rico, 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 and freshman
Theodora Francu lost to Danika Kahatapitiya of Navy, 6-2, 6-1. Red-shirt sophomore
Claire Bedi fell to Meghan O'Malley in the consolation championship, 8-3.
In doubles, Vasilkova and seniorÂ
Nicole Shakhnazarova were defeated by Aimee Dervishian and Danika Kahatapitiya in the semifinals of the championship bracket while Bedi and Francu were defeated in the championship semifinals by Isabel Balsavage and Tina Li, 6-2. Williams and junior Yevgenia Shusterman fell to Emily Louie-Meadors and Claudia Mackenzie, 6-1.
