WASHINGTON, D.C. - With the match tied at 3-3, Towson University women's tennis senior
Renate van Oorschodt posted a 7-5, 7-5 victory at No. 5 singles to give the Tigers a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Georgetown Tuesday at Yates Field House.
Towson (2-2) has now won two of its last three.
"This was a statement win by these girls," said head coach
Jamie Peterson. "First win ever against Georgetown They were able to come back just two days after a disappointing loss at Navy. I am so proud of how they competed, led by co-captains Renate van Oorschodt and
Lucy Williams."
The Tigers trailed 3-1 after the Hoyas earned the first point by sweeping all three doubles matches and posting wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Junior
Yevgeniya Shusterman earned the team's first point after a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.
Playing without their top player at No. 1 singles, senior
Nicole Shakhnazarova, due to injury, Williams stepped in at earned a hard fought 7-5, 7-6 (4) to pull the Tigers within one before junior
Lucy Gloninger tied the match at 3-3 with a victory at No. 6 singles.
With the outcome of the match riding on the outcome at No. 5 singles, van Oorschodt pulled out a 7-5, 7-5 win to give Towson the win, avenging last year's 4-3 loss to the Hoyas at home.
The Tigers continue their five-match road trip on Saturday with a 6 p.m., contest at Saint Joseph's.
