PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Towson University women's track and field junior
Lauren Coleman won the shot put while junior
Phontavia Sawyer broke her own school record in the discus as the Tigers competed at the 124th Penn Relays hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at historic Franklin Field.
Coleman won the shot put with a mark of 51-5.25 to edge out Notre Dame's Indi Jackson who had a toss of 51-0.75. Towson and Notre Dame totaled four of the top five finishers as Sawyer finished fifth at 49-8.25 behind the Irish's Abbey Kapitan at 50-2.25.
Coleman also finished 15th in the college hammer throw with a mark of 166-9 while junior
Taylor Giles was 20th at 160-0.
In the championship hammer throw, senior
Ksenia Safonova finished eighth with a toss of 190-7, just off her season-best of 192-7 set at the Victor Lopez Classic.
In the discus, Sawyer finished eighth, breaking her own school record with a mark of 155-4, besting her previous mark of 152-6. Giles
finished 20th with a mark of 133-6 while senior
Taylor Weiss was 25th and Coleman was 26th.
Junior
Naja McAdam finished 14th in the high jump with a leap of 5-4.25 which was just of her season-best set at the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational.
Towson will now prepare to defend its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship before heading to William & Mary on Friday, May 4 to begin its defense.
