Wiers, Metil Earn AVCA Regional Major Awards

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- As the 2019 NCAA Tournament hits the regional round, several members of the Towson University women's volleyball program earn East Regional honors from the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA).

The awards were announced on Tuesday as Lydia Wiers was named AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year while Don Metil was tapped as the AVCA East Region Coach of the Year. Additionally, senior setter Marrisa Wonders was named to the AVCA East All-Region Team while Wiers and Olivia Finckel were named AVCA East All-Region Honorable Mention.

Wonders becomes the first-ever Tiger to earn All-Region honors. Previously, four different players earned honorable mention honors across five seasons. Wiers and Metil are the program's first-ever AVCA East Region major award winners.

Wiers, who was named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Year, made her presence known early as she finished her first season with 121 total blocks, averaging 1.15 per set. The five-time CAA Rookie of the Week was the only player in the CAA to finish with a hitting percentage north of .400 as she ranks 12th nationally with a .403. As the only freshman nationally to hit over .400 this season, Wiers is just the second Tiger in program history to hit over .400 in a single season. The Willard, Ohio native ranked third on the team in kills per set, averaging 2.57 with 270 kills in 105 sets played.

Despite a hand injury early in the season Wonders, the 2019 CAA Player and Setter of the Year, capped her career with 1,289 assists this season, averaging 11.51 per set. Her per-set average ranks ninth in the country and is best amongst AVCA East Region setters. Wonders ran a versatile offense, pushing five different players over 200 kills. Towson was one of three NCAA Tournament teams to enter the bracket with five 200-plus killers. Wonders' 1,289 assists this season ranks eighth for a single season in program history and are the most in the 25-point rally era. Additionally, Wonders posted 17 double-doubles this season, grabbing a team second-best 320 digs at a 2.86 per-set average. She aided on 37 blocks as well, posting a pair of single stops.

In his seventh season as head coach, Metil guided the program to its best-ever season as the Tigers captured their first league title since 2004. Under the 2019 CAA Coach of the Year, Towson went unblemished through the entire CAA slate with the league's first-ever 16-0 record in the regular season, followed by two wins in the CAA Tournament. Towson became the first team in the rally scoring era to run the table in the CAA. This season, the Tigers went 29-3 overall, a 12-win improvement over last season. Towson won 23-straight matches, including the program's first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament with a five-set thriller over American. For just the fourth time in program history, Towson was not swept as the Tigers went 18-0 in three-set matches.
