Towson Excited To Host UMBC Tuesday

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's basketball returns home for its first contest at SECU Arena in 29 days when it hosts UMBC.
 
There will be plenty to enjoy for everybody who attends the game between these rivals separated by the Beltway.

Game Promotion
  • Fans attending the game are encouraged to donate winter apparel for the DMD/GRC Holiday Winter Apparel Drive. Discounted $10 tickets are available for the game as well.
  • In addition, the game will feature an opportunity for Towson students to win free prizes that include Beats By Dre headphones, $100 Fandango gift card and free parking for the 2020 spring semester.
  • The game will also feature discounted concessions.
  • In addition, the counseling center will donate some giveaways and provide pamphlets related to testing and stress to give to students when they arrive at the gate.
  • Plenty of in-game entertainment including the band, Doc The Tiger, cheerleaders and dance squad.
 
Starting Five
  • This is Towson's second straight game against an America East opponent.
  • Towson is 23-3 against in-state opponents since the start of the 2012-13 season.
  • The Tigers are 31-15 in the Pat Skerry-era when allowing fewer than 60 points, including 3-1 this season.
  • Towson has held three of its last four opponents below 40 percent shooting.
  • The Tigers lead the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in scoring defense (69.6), field-goal percentage defense (38.8), offensive rebounds (12.1), offensive rebounding percentage (33.7) and steals (8.1).
 
Towson Update
  • Towson's two-game winning streak was ended with its 55-38 loss at Vermont on Saturday.
  • Brian Fobbs (nine points) and Nakye Sanders (eight) were Towson's leading scorers against the Catamounts.
  • Towson limited Vermont to 55 points, 13 below its season. Towson forced 15 turnovers, had eight steals and limited the Catamounts to 35.4 percent shooting.
  • The Tigers have three players with at least 20 assists: Jakigh Dottin (24), Brian Fobbs (21) and Jason Gibson (21).
  • All five of Towson's losses this season have come against schools that competed in a 2019 postseason event: Kent State (CIT), Florida (NCAA), Xavier (NIT), Buffalo (NCAA) and Vermont (NCAA)
  • Brian Fobbs is 12th in the CAA in scoring (14.3) ... Juwan Gray is third in 3-point field goal percentage (47.6) and 11th in field goal percentage (50.0) ... Allen Betrand is fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (46.7) ... Nakye Sanders is tied for sixth in rebounding (7.0) ... Dennis Tunstall is third in offensive rebounds (2.8), tied for fifth in blocked shots (1.1) and 13th in rebounding (5.9).
  • Towson has enjoyed a scoring run of nine or more consecutive points in eight games this season.
  • The Tigers are 42nd nationally in 3-point field goal percentage defense (28.1).
 
A Look At UMBC
  • UMBC erased a double-digit deficit in the second half to take the lead late, but Saint Francis held on for a 63-60 win on Saturday. It was UMBC's second straight loss despite L.J. Owens' team high 17 points.
  • Senior K.J. Jackson as the only other Retriever in double figures with 11 points, all coming in the second half. He added five assists in the loss. Max Curran finished with seven rebounds.
  • UMBC is 2-5 against Division I opponents this year with wins over Florida Gulf Coast (65-61) and Drexel (85-60). The Retreivers have lost five of their last six games.
  • UMBC's scoring leaders are Darnell Rogers (14.0), K.J. Jackson (13.5) and L.J. Owens (10.0).

  • Towson has won 10 of the last 12 meetings against UMBC, including six straight.
  • Towson is 3-0 against UMBC at SECU Arena.
  • All three wins have been by double digits with an average margin of victory of 18 points.
