TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's golf team enjoyed its memorable week in Hawai'i.
In addition to playing three rounds on the beautiful Waikoloa Resort Kings' Course, the Tigers ate well, hiked, ran, had fun and snapped enough photos to last a lifetime. It also helped they ended the trip with a bang thanks to freshman
Jordan Cornelius tying the school record for lowest round with a 68 in Saturday's final round.
In tying
Alix Lowe's mark set in 2017, Cornelius was two under on the front nine and the back nine. The highlight of her performance was an eagle on the 18th hole. During the final round, Cornelius had birdies on the first, second, fifth and 11th holes. She finished tied for 10th overall with a three round score of 229. Towson was sixth overall.
"Hawai'i was amazing," Towson sophomore
Sarah Perine said. "We had the greatest time. It was definitely an unforgettable once in a lifetime experience. Besides playing golf we hiked Waipio Valley, went to the volcano national park, saw waterfalls, the black sand beach, and went to a luau. It was so much fun! On the flight over we did homework and studied and watched movies together."
Towson took two flights totaling 11 hours, 35 minutes from Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International Airport to Kona, Hawai'i via San Francisco. During the flight, the Tigers watched movies and slept. Nestled among the dramatic black lava fields of South Kohala, on the sunny west coast of the Island of Hawaiʻi, is the beautiful resort town of Waikoloa where the Tigers stayed.
The Tigers visited the world-famous Panalu'u Bake Shop, the Southernmost bakery in the U.S.A. It's located in the quaint little town of Naalehu near the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach in which the Tigers also explored and had a blast. Towson hiked the Waipiʻo Valley, which is located in the Hamakua District of the Big Island of Hawai'i. "Waipiʻo" means "curved water" in the Hawaiian language.
"We were all excited to be in Hawai'i," Towson senior
Alix Lowe said. "A highlight was the hike to the waterfall. It was a struggle going back up but worth the sight. Of course, the beach days and the golf course was amazing as well."
In addition, the Tigers sampled 100 percent Kona coffee, visited the Akaka Falls and walked through a lava tunnel. Even though it rained when they visited the volcanoes, they were still able to feel the steam coming from volcano according to junior
Erica Han.
"It was perfect for a nice facial," said Han with a laugh. "We mostly went to the beach or pool after each round so it was nice to go on an excursion. We were able to walk on the Panalu'u Black Sand Beach, tried donuts from the southernmost bakery shop in the US. Also a major highlight was the luau! It was unlike anything I have seen before and it was super entertaining and fun."
A few of the Tigers went on stage and danced with the professionals during the luau.
"Hawai'i was incredible," Towson senior
Jenny Buchanan said. "We had so much fun on and off the golf course and it was definitely the experience of a lifetime. We're so lucky to have had the opportunity to play golf in a place that is truly paradise! One of my favorite memories was the luau and bonding in general with the team was incredible throughout the whole trip. I also can't forget Jordan tying the school record. Overall, it was a super cool experience."
