TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's track and field team remains local this week for a pair of meets.
Most members of the team will participate in the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Invitational Friday at Johns Hopkins while a few others will compete in the Mason Spring Invitational Saturday at George Mason.
The Tigers are coming off a great weekend in which they won the Towson Invitational.
In addition to its 4 x 100 and 4 x 400-meter relay teams finishing first, the Tigers had the following individuals win events at the Towson Invitational:
Crystal Johnson (100),
Shelby Francis (400 hurdles),
Victoria Jones-Alleyne (100 hurdles),
Olivia Janke (1,500),
Abby Gauthier (steeplechase),
Hayley Horvath (pole vault),
Ani Boghossian-James (high jump),
Michella Obijiaku (shot put) and
Phontavia Sawyer (discus).
Already this outdoor season, Reid, Johnson and Horvath have set school records. Johnson earned CAA Track Athlete of the Week on March 19 and April 9 and Horvath was named CAA Field Athlete of the Week on April 2 and 9.
Through three weeks, Towson has established itself as one of the contenders for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship. The Tigers are ranked sixth in the latest USTFCCCA regional rankings, the highest of any CAA team.
Johnson (100-meter dash),
Liz Reid (200-meter dash and 400-meter run), Jones-Alleyne (100-meter hurdles), Francis (400-meter hurdles), Horvath (pole vault) and Obijiaku (shot put) have the best marks in their respective events on the recent CAA performance list.
In addition, Johnson is a member of the 4 x 100-meter relay team that has the top mark in the CAA. Johnson also has the second fastest time in the CAA in the 200. She set a school record in the 100 last weekend at the Towson Invitational, crossing the finish line in 11.77 seconds. Horvath also set a school record in the pole vault. Her clearance of 4.05 meters (13-03.50) in the pole vault is 14th in the East Region.
Towson's next meet is next weekend when it competes in the Morgan State Legacy Meet on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20. Some athletes will participate in the Larry Ellis Meet at Princeton on Friday, April 19.
