No. 4 Maryland Comes to Town for Wednesday Field Hockey

TOWSON, Md. Wednesday afternoon the Towson University field hockey team hosts No. 4 Maryland in a 4 p.m. game.
 
This is the first time the Tigers will face an opponent ranked in the top-10 since hosting then-No. 8 Delaware in the end of the 2016 season. Wednesday's game will mark the first ranked opponent to play on the field at the TU Field Hockey Complex. Towson will be hosting Special Olympics Maryland in the pregame ceremony as part of the Special Olympics Day programming.
 
The game will be streamed online through the Towson Sports Network with Brandon Sacks on the call and former Tiger Katie McNeel providing color commentary. Live stats will also be available.
 
Scouting the Tigers
Towson (0-3) is coming off an overtime loss at Colgate on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Georgia Beachley scored two of the Tiger goals in the 4-3 final and leads the team in goals. Fellow rookie Samantha Aljets assisted on each goal and leads the roster. Beachley is currently tied for sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) stats for goals scored while Aljets is fifth in assists. Freshman goalkeeper Tess Okkerse has started in all three games, she has 18 saves on the season.
 
Last Time Out
Freshman Georgia Beachley led the Tigers with two goals after Kathryn Parkinson got the road team on the board. Towson led 1-0 at halftime and scored the first goal of the third quarter. The Raiders responded with three unanswered goals, taking a 3-2 lead in the 57th minute. Beachley scored her second goal of the day at the 57:48 mark and tied the game forcing overtime. Colgate capitalized on a corner in the first minute of extra time sealing the win.
 
Scouting the Terrapins
Fourth-ranked Maryland (3-1) is coming off a 1-0 loss to then-No. 3 Duke over the weekend. The Terps have five players who have scored two goals each this season, led by Madison Maguire with two goals and five assists. Maryland's starting goalkeeper, Noelle Frost, has allowed just three goals this season and has grabbed 11 saves. Coming off the team's 25th conference championship, the Terrapins have seen two ranked opponents in Boston College and Duke and are currently scheduled to face nine more in the regular season.
 
The Maryland Series
Wednesday will be the 33rd meeting between the two teams, with Maryland holding a 30-win advantage. The teams have tied twice and Towson has yet to get a win against the Terrapins. This will be the first time since 2000 that Maryland has come to the Tigers' turf to play, the last six meetings have been in College Park.
 
Last Time against Maryland
In 2017 the No. 11 Terps hosted Towson in the 2017 Terrapin Invitational and took an 8-0 win. In the loss, Tiger goalkeeper Emilee Woodall broke a 34-year old school record for single game saves. The former keeper made 34 stops.
 
Local Action Ahead
Sunday the Tigers hit the road, and travel to Maryland's campus to participate in the Terrapin Invitational. Towson faces American at 2:30 p.m., the game will be streamed on BTN Plus. Tigers in the Community
The Towson University athletics department deems community service as one of its highest priorities to give back to the Greater Baltimore area. For the seventh consecutive year, the department exceeded 10,000 hours of community service to the Greater Baltimore region, finishing with 11,162 hours of community service in the 2018-19 academic season. Towson ranked No. 1 nationally for community service and won the 2018 National Championship for Community Service through the Helper Helper NCAA Team Works Competition. Towson had a 97% participation rate, attended 118 community service opportunities and volunteered with 19 organizations. Towson won the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award from Susan G. Komen of Maryland.
