Towson Finishes Strong To Beat UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Towson University men's basketball team concluded a grueling stretch of four games in eight days by claiming a satisfying 67-60 victory over UNCW in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) contest at raucous Trask Coliseum Saturday night.
 
Sophomore guard Allen Betrand scored seven of his team-high tying 16 points in the final 3 minutes, 33 seconds to help the Tigers earn their first conference win of the season. Senior guard Brian Fobbs, who also finished with 16 points and five rebounds, sank a 3-pointer with 4:11 remaining to give the Tigers the lead for good, 52-49.
 
Senior forward Nakye Sanders scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Tigers, who won the rebounding battle, 44-31. Towson got 3-pointers from Jason Gibson, Fobbs and Betrand during a two-minute stretch late in the second half to regain control after UNCW took a 47-44 lead with 5:59 remaining.
 
Jaylen Sims led three UNCW players in double figures with 14 points. Shykeim Phillips and Ty Gadsden added 10 points each for the Seahawks, who lost their ninth consecutive contest despite collecting 13 steals.

How It Happened
  • Towson outscored UNCW, 23-13 in the final six minutes.
  • The Tigers made 9-of-10 free throws, including six in the final 13 seconds, after intermission.
  • Dennis Tunstall had six points and six rebounds.
  • Jakigh Dottin and Juwan Gray combined for 12 rebounds for Towson.
  • UNCW used a 22-9 burst to take its only lead of the second half after a Gadsden 3-pointer.
  • The Tigers led 35-25 with 15:10 remaining following a Fobbs basket.
  • The Tigers' 27-21 halftime lead probably would've been larger had it not been for eight turnovers and a 5-for-12 effort from the foul line.
  • Towson was locked in defensively as it held UNCW to 23.3 percent shooting (7-for-30) in the first half.
  • Towson recorded assists on five of its first seven baskets.
  • The Tigers used a 13-2 run over seven minutes to open a 21-12 bulge with 4:37 remaining.
  • Brian Fobbs had a two-handed dunk off of a nice pass from Nakye Sanders to open the scoring.

  • This was the second time in four games that Dottin has finished with at least a six rebounds.
  • Dennis Tunstall blocked his 97th career shot to move into a tie with Greg McClinton for ninth all-time in program history.
  • The Tigers grabbed 19 defensive rebounds off of 23 UNCW missed shots for an 82 percent defensive rebounding percentage in the first half.
  • This was the 11th time this season that Sanders has finished with at least six rebounds in a game.
  • The 21 first half points were the fewest allowed to a Division I opponent this season for Towson.
  • Towson has finished with at least 40 rebounds in three consecutive games.
  • Betrand has scored in double figures in every CAA contest.
  • He is averaging 17.3 points per game through three CAA games.
  • Betrand has eight games this season with multiple 3-pointers in a game this season.
