Softball to Participate in Colonial Classic

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team gear up for their final road tournament this Friday, Feb. 28-29 against Princeton, George Washington and Georgetown.

The Tigers will first take on Princeton in the Colonial Classic Friday at noon inside the GW Softball Field.

Tournament Schedule
Friday, Feb. 28
Vs. Princeton at Noon
Vs. George Washington at 2 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 29
Vs. Georgetown at 9 a.m.

Last Time Out
Towson participated in the Pirate Invitational, falling to East Carolina 6-5 in extra innings on Sunday, Feb. 23.

Towson took an early 1-0 lead after Nicole Kidwiler reached base on a bunt and later stole to second then Julia Smith-Harrington reached base on a throwing error allowing Kidwiler to score. 

Smith-Harrington pitched the entire game with three strikeouts and moves to 2-1 on the season. Sara Johnson led the team in doubles. Jessica Swistock improved her hit streak to four games.

Scouting Princeton
The Tigers fell in their opening weekend to 6-3 to Louisiana Tech on Feb. 23. They came out of the first weekend of the season with a .289 team batting average. Sophomore Madison Hamilton led the Tigers with more than one at-bat with a .600 BA (3 for 5), and classmate Ali Blanchard popped the Tigers' first home run of the season. Blanchard, senior Caroline Taber and rookie Alexis Laudenslager split time in the circle over the week.

Scouting George Washington
The Colonials defeated Brown 2-1 on Feb. 23. Faith Weber blasted a pair of solo home runs and tossed to lead GW in the victory.

GW is led by Jenna Cone is who is batting .356 and leads the team in hits (16) with three home runs. Jessica Linguist leads the teams in doubles with four.

In the circle, Weber leads the way with 34.1 innings pitched and 25 strikeouts.

Scouting Georgetown
The Hoyas fell to Stony Brook 2-1 on Sunday, Feb. 23. Savannah Jones had an RBI double and Mae Forshey scored for Georgetown.

Forshey leads the team with a .356 batting average, 16 hits and two home runs. Both Forshey and Jones lead the team in doubles (3).

In the circle, London Diller has a 3.07 batting average, throwing 41 innings with 43 strikeouts.

Scouting Towson
The Tigers are led by Smith-Harrington who has a .464 batting average, 13 hits, with two doubles and two home runs.  Swistock leads the team in RBIs (6) and is tied with Jaclyn Mounie for three doubles so far this season.

In the circle, Smith-Harrington has a 1.59 ERA and 14 strikeouts. Sara Johnson leads the team with 22 strikeouts.

Tigers in the Community
The Towson University athletics department deems community service as one of its highest priorities to give back to the Greater Baltimore area.
  • For the 7th consecutive year, the department exceeded 10,000 hours of community service to the Greater Baltimore region, finishing with 11,162 hours of community service in the 2018-19 academic season.
  • Towson ranked #1 nationally for community service and won the 2018 National Championship for Community Service through the Helper Helper NCAA Team Works Competition.
  • Towson had a 97% participation rate, attended 118 community service opportunities and volunteered with 19 organizations.
  • Towson won the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award from Susan G. Komen of Maryland.
