Back in the Water
A second meet and a season opener await the Towson University women's and men's swimming and diving programs this Friday in the state capital. Both sides renew local rivalries against Johns Hopkins and host Navy at 4 p.m.
In The National Rankings
In the Preseason CSCAA Coaches' Polls, Navy's men landed in the receiving votes column, garner two tallies. The Division III Preseason Poll has not yet been released, but the Blue Jays were ranked fifth on the men's side and seventh on the women's in the March 3, 2020 polls.
The See You Home in January - Women
It's a short home schedule for the Towson women's swimming & diving team. The Tigers hosted James Madison last weekend and bookened the dual season with a showdown against Delaware on Jan. 29, almost four months later.
The women took advantage of the home pool, besting James Madison 157-143 in the Tigers' first win over the Dukes since 2010-11*
Six different Tigers tallied at least one individual win over James Madison:
Karlee Carminati,
Samantha Casolo,
Meagan Clark,
Alyssa Largay,
Katie Nunez and
Hailey Ritter. Of those six, three picked up multiple wins: Carminati (1,000 free, 500 free), Clark (200 free, 100 breast) and Nunez (100 breast, 100 free). Nunez added a second-place finish in the 200 yard IM as well.
Towson picked up the season-opening win thanks to secondary scoring with second-place finishes from Nunez,
Hailey Ritter,
Tiffany Matulis, and several third-place finishes, including
Sarah DiGaetano on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Middie Mince added two thirds in the freestyle sprints as well.
These Tigers will look to make program history and top the Mids for the first time ever.
* They had only met twice since then prior to last Saturday
Scouting the Mids - Women
The Mids enter Friday's tri-meet with an 0-1 overall record, falling to Penn State 209-91 last week in Central Pennsylvania. Sydney Harrington won two events for Navy, the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly events. Martina Thomas added two second place finishes while diver Hannah Montau won the 3-meter board.
Scouting the Blue Jays - Women
Johns Hopkins swimming rolls to Annapolis with an 0-2 mark, falling against Division I foes UMBC (157.5-122.5) and Delaware (173-127) last weekend in Catonsville. Hopkins won the 200 medley relay to open the event while Michelle Liu, finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke. Kristen Alicea-Jorgenson won the 50 free as Cameron Roche won the 200 back. Last weekend, the Tiger men hosted an intersquad meet that ran concurrently with the women's dual meet against James Madison.
The men's team returns 17 individual medalists from the championship meet in March, out of a possible 42 individual medals up for grabs.
During the 2020-21 season, the men's side went 3-1 overall, with the lone loss coming against Navy, a 188-100 setback in Annapolis to open the season. The Tigers went on to win their next three duals, topping local rivals Loyola (157-143), Mount St. Mary's (139-103) and Delaware (164.5-123.5) in succession.
