Men’s Swimming and Diving Edged at UMBC

CATONSVILLE, Md. -- It was a close showdown between cross-county foes, but the Towson University men's swimming and diving team was edged 157-141 Saturday afternoon at UMBC Aquatic Center against the host UMBC Retrievers.

Towson (1-3) got a three-win day from Catonsville native Brian Benzing, who won the 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM. Ajani Dorner picked up two victories in the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers picked up the first win of the day in the 200-yard medley relay, led by Evan Bota, Brian Benzing, Trey Adkins and Ryan Baldino. The group finished in 1 minute, 31.40 seconds.
  • Two events later, Michael Fazio finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 1:43.28, three-hundredths of a second ahead of third place. Luke Schwar took fourth in 1:44.75.
  • Towson went one-two in the 100-yard back, paced by a 51.51 from Bota while Nick McClure finished in 53.23. Noah Diacumakos took a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 58.30.
  • In the 50-yard freestyle, Brian Benzing won the sprint with a 21.07, winning by two-tenths of a second. Baldino finished third with a 21.29. Likewise, Ajani Dorner won the 1-meter diving event, scoring a 274.84.
  • Fazio added a win at 100-yards in the freestyle, winning by over half a second in 46.05. Reed Sells picked up third-place points in the 200-yard back with a time of 1:53.74, followed by a fourth-place finish from Patrick Flint (1:54.24).
  • Sells added more third-place points in the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:53.74 while Benzing picked up another win in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning in 2:03.28, a victory of nearly eight full seconds. Tanner Fatta took third in 2:11.33.
  • Ryan Bookstein tacked on a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:45.92, followed by a 100-yard butterfly win from McClure, who touched in 50.90. Baldino finished fourth in 52.20.
  • Dorner swept the boards, winning the 3-meter dive with a 262.80.
  • Benzing tripled on the day with a victory in the 200-yard IM, winning by nearly three seconds with a 1:53.29.
  • In the day's final event, Towson won the second relay, taking the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 3:03.33, winning by four seconds with Baldino, Adkins, Schwar and Fazio.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers are idle next week before heading to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for the annual Bucknell Invitational.
  • Action kicks off at the Kinney Natatorium on Friday, Nov. 19 and runs until Sunday, Nov. 21.
  • Each day will feature qualifying heats at 10 a.m. and finals heats at 6 p.m.
