LAKE WORTH, Fla. – The Towson University men's golf team opened the spring campaign at the Southern Invitational on Monday with a pair of 18-hole rounds at The Falls Club of the Palm Beaches.
Sophomore
Jeremy Summerson made 23 pars and finished the day at nine-over par after rounds of 76-77. Summerson had three birdies overall and is tied for 47
th overall.
Jackson Courtney birdied three of his last eight holes during the morning round then shot a respectable 76 in the afternoon. The senior finished the day at +12.
Justin Griffith fired an opening round two-over 74. The junior had birdies on three of his first eight holes during the morning session.
Brad Riley and
Julian Gonzalez are also competing for the Tigers. Riley, Griffith and Courtney each made four birdies on Monday.
"It was great to be back playing again after a year," Towson head coach
Mike Larkin said. "There was definitely some rust, not having been able to hit on grass yet this semester before getting down here. There were a lot of positives though. The guys came with a great attitude and kept battling through some tough rounds. This is a great first day to build on."
After two rounds, the Tigers are 12th overall. The tournament wraps up Tuesday with another 18 holes.
Senior
Derek Gold is playing the tournament as an individual, so his score does not count in the team standings. He birdied the first hole during both rounds.
Rick van der Nat, who is expected to be one of Towson's top players this spring, has six dates of competition to sit out before competing, so he will miss the first two tournaments of the season.
