URBANA, Md. – Senior
Jackson Courtney and sophomore
Brad Riley each carded four-over rounds of 76 during the opening round of The Carpetbagger Classic at Worthington Manor Golf Club. Courtney and Riley are tied for 13
th place. None of the 66 players in the field broke par on Saturday.
Courtney played even par on the back 9, which included a birdie on the 18
th hole. Riley, who also played the back 9 at even par, made three birdies on the day.
Justin Griffith made a team-high four birdies and played even par over his last 10 holes. He finished +6.
Julian Gonzalez and
Jeremy Summerson are also competing for Towson. The Tigers are in a tied for 8
th place after 18 holes.
"They had the course set up today that if any one part of your game was a little bit off, you could get exposed and that is what we saw out there, so when that happens you shoot 76 instead of 72," head coach
Mike Larkin said. "That was the case for the entire field. When only one player in a college event shoots 72 on a wind-free day, that tells you the golf course is playing pretty difficult."
Derek Gold, playing as an individual, shot 77.
The tournament will wrap up tomorrow with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
