URBANA, Md. – Jackson Courtney shot an even-par 72 during the final round of the Carpetbagger Classic at Worthington Manor Golf Club on Sunday. The senior from Marriotts Ridge in nearby Howard County made five birdies and finished in a sixth place tie for the tournament after rounds of 76-72.
Courtney, who
has qualified for 24 of the 28 events during his Towson career, has now produced seven rounds of playing to par or better. He shot one-under on the front nine and one-over on the back nine. He birdied #12, his final hole of the tournament, to secure the par round. After two tournaments this season, he leads the team in scoring average (75.4). Four of his five rounds have been 76 or better.
"As a senior, he is really stepping up," head coach
Mike Larkin said. "Jackson has put in a lot of work. His ball striking is fantastic and today his putting started to come around. He can be dangerous if he can start putting well again. During his high school career and early on here at Towson, Jackson was a great putter. That started to come back today. It is fun to see."
Sophomore
Brad Riley carded a two-over 74 Sunday and finished in a tie for 12
th place. His round featured back-to-back birdies at the second and third holes.
Justin Griffith finished the round with a three-over 75 and finished the tournament at +9. An eagle on the par 5 5th hole highlighted his round.
Jeremy Summerson rebounded from a subpar round on Saturday to shoot a one-over 73 on Sunday. He made five birdies, including the 10
th. A day earlier, the sophomore had a quadruple bogey on the hole. Summerson birdied four of six holes during one stretch.
Overall, the top four Tigers shot a combined 294 on the day, tied with Lafayette for the lowest of the tournament. Towson moved up four spots and finished fourth out of 10. Towson improved by 18 strokes from Saturday's round. Fairleigh Dickinson beat Bucknell by five strokes to win the team championship. Robert Morris finished third, one shot ahead of the Tigers.
Only one of the 66 players in the field shot under par during the two rounds. Courtney was one of five players to shoot even par. Bucknell's Jack Gardner (72-73) and Fairleigh Dickinson's Jaime Julve (75-70) tied for first place, three strokes ahead of Courtney, after 36 holes. Julve defeated Gardner on the second playoff hole for the individual title.
Julian Gonzalez, who improved by five shots today, also competed for Towson at the Carpetbagger.
Derek Gold, playing as an individual, shot 76 Sunday. He tied Griffith for 22
nd place after rounds of 77-76.
"It was nice to see the improvement. Today was more like what the guys expected of themselves based on what we had seen in practice last week and in qualifying," added Larkin. "As I mentioned yesterday, if one part of your game is a little bit off, the scores could go sky high. Each of the guys worked on that one thing after the round yesterday and in warmup today. That hard work showed. All six players improved from Round 1 to Round 2."
