HELLERTOWN, Pa. –
Brad Riley carded a 1-under round of 71 during the opening round of the Abarta Collegiate Invitational at the Steel Club on Sunday afternoon.
Towson University finished the day in a fourth place tie, with its top four players shooting a combined 9-over par.
Riley opened his round with birdies on two of his first three holes. He was one-over after 10 holes but birdies on No. 9 and No. 10 moved him back under par. He birdied No. 15 to move to 2-under with one hole to play, but made bogey on his final hole.
Riley is tied for 8
th place overall. Sunday's round was the best of the season for the sophomore, who shot a pair of 69's as a freshman in the fall 2019.
"Brad played really well," Towson head coach
Mike Larkin said. "I think we did a really good job preparing for this tournament. We knew the golf course was going to play tricky and the greens would be firm and fast. Brad did a nice job working his way around the golf course, being patient and making some birdies."
Jackson Courtney and
Jeremy Summerson are tied for 19
th after rounds of 3-over 75. Eight of Courtney's 11 rounds this spring have been 76 or better.
Justin Griffith is one back of Courtney and Summerson after a 4-over 76, while
Julian Gonzalez carded a 78.
Senior
Derek Gold, playing as an individual, shot 78.
