Riley, Griffith Shoot Even Par during Second Round of CAA Championship

ST. HELENA ISLAND S.C. – Brad Riley and Justin Griffith each posted rounds of even-par 72 during the second round of the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men's Golf Championship on Monday at the Cotton Dike Course on the Dataw Island Golf Course.

It was the second straight 72 for Riley, who is in 12th place after 36 holes. The sophomore's round consisted of 12 pars and three birdies, including one on the par-5 18th hole. He is tied for third in the field in Par 5 scoring after two rounds, shooting 5-under par on those holes.

"If Brad can play a good round tomorrow, he can get into the mix for a Top 10- finish," Towson head coach Mike Larkin said. "He seems to be cruising and is putting the ball and all the right spots."

Griffith had 10 pars and four birdies on Monday. The junior made birdies on three of the final seven holes, including No. 18. He is 4-over after two rounds, tied for 19th place. Griffith is tied with Riley four the tea lead in pars (21 pars) and has played the Par 3 holes in even par.

Jackson Courtney was 2-over par through 13 holes, but settled for a 5-over par round of 77. He is alone in 24th place at +9 after two days. He had played the first 13 holes at 1-over but the final five holes at +8. The senior is tied for the top spot in the tournament at the Par 3 holes, shooting 1-under par.

Jeremy Summerson improved by three strokes from Monday. After hitting 14 of the 18 greens in regulation yesterday, but having six three-putts, the sophomore did not record any three putts during the second round.

Towson's four top scorers shot a combined 299 (+11) for a two-day total of 27-over par. Julian Gonzalez is four strokes behind Summerson entering the final round.

The Tigers are in seventh place, six strokes behind sixth place Delaware but are 66 shots clear of eighth place Hofstra. The College of Charleston leads the tournament by 17 strokes at 19-under par. The Cougars have four players under par and in the Top 8.

"Overall the day was a little deflating," added Larkin. "Today was moving day and it seemed everyone above us was around even par and we went the wrong way. Everyone was thinking even or under par and only two did it. The guys who shot the higher numbers got out of position a few too many times."

The three-day tournament will concludes Tuesday. Towson start the round between 8-8:48 a.m. on the 10th tee.

Towson earned the 2010 CAA championship. Since joining the league in 2002, two Tigers have earned individual championships – Billy Wingerd (2004) and Juan Veloza (2014).
