FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. –
Justin Griffith fired a one-under par 71 during the second round of the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational in Fayetteville, Pa on the Founders Course at the Penn National Golf Club Saturday. The junior finished in a second place tie, just one stroke behind the winner.
Towson had the second lowest score of the day, shooting eight-over 296, to finish in 5
th place, just three strokes out of second.
Griffith, who shot 74 Friday in blustery conditions, had three birdies and two bogeys on the round. He was just one of three golfers to break par on the round. The Pittsburgh native, playing in his 20
th consecutive tournament as a Tiger, shot a career-best 69 during the second round of the Furman Invitational last weekend. After four tournaments this spring, Griffith leads the team in scoring average (74.9). Seven of his 10 rounds, including today, have been 75 or better.
"Justin is doing a great job but he needs to be a little easier on himself. He beats himself up a little too much," head coach
Mike Larkin said. "This weekend was a good tournament for him. He is doing a lot of right things that you need to do to be successful, like getting on the correct side of the hole and missing where you need to miss."
Each of the five golfers improved from Friday's round.
Jackson Courtney had six birdies and carded a two-over 74. The senior finished tied for 19
th place.
Jeremy Summerson (75) and
Julian Gonzalez (76) were each a shot back of Courtney, finishing 11-over par after 36 holes. They tied for 22
nd place.
Brad Riley was one stroke behind Summerson and Gonzalez after a final round 77.
"Being out there as a group and having me be out there with them, I thought we did a good job of plotting our way around the golf course," added Larkin. "We were getting into the right spots most of the day. There were some tough-hole locations and we got on the proper side of those to give ourselves a chance. "
The Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational included 10 teams – Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, LIU, Mount St. Mary's, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (PA.), Towson, Wagner and Youngstown State.
Sacred Heart won the tournament (+27) by two strokes over Bryant and Robert Morris. Chris Sabol (Robert Morris) shot an even par 144, beating Griffith, first round leader Nick Piersall (Bryant) and teammate Chase Miller by one shot.
