TOWSON, Md. – Towson University's top doubles duo of
Themis Haliou and
Alexa Martinez were named to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) second team.
Haliou and Martinez went 10-9 during the 2021 season, including CAA victories over Elon, Drexel and Hofstra. From March 7 through April 15, the two teamed up to win eight-of-11 matches.
"Every time they stepped on the court this year they gave us a chance to win," Towson head coach
Jamie Peterson said. "They were playing at a high level and had good chemistry on and off the court."
Peterson used Haliou, Martinez and
Amelia Lawson in the top three singles spots all season. Martinez was 3-3 at the No. 1 position. The senior played 123 combined matches at Towson and has the distinction of winning matches at all six singles and all three doubles spots in the lineup. At the No. 2 singles, Haliou was undefeated in five matches, winning 60-of-67 games. The junior played 13 matches at No. 1.
"Alexa didn't play a lot of doubles as a freshman but she improved her net game and ended up playing No. 1 doubles for three straight years, Peterson added. "Themis complemented her well. That is why I had them together."
The last Towson player named to one of the All-CAA team was 2018
Nicole Shakhnazarova, who earned second team in singles. Towson had at least one player earn All-CAA honors in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
