Haliou Wins Flight as Tennis Completes Competition at Bedford Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Themis Haliou was crowned champion of the B flight after a thrilling three-set win as the Towson University women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Bedford Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Three other Tigers also placed in the top-3 of their own brackets, including Sarah Pospischill who placed second in her flight for the second time, after finishing as the runner-up in 2019. Olivia Rothfeld and Amelia Lawson both won the back draws of their respective flights to place third.

"There was lots of tennis this weekend but it is good to be back competing," head coach Jamie Peterson said. "Themis beat Howard's best player in another clutch performance. Amelia and Olivia also won their back draws in their flights. Overall, going 5-0 in singles matches against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponents and incredible an 9-1 in third set tiebreakers is great. Also, congrats to the three newcomers who got their first wins as Tigers!"

Singles

Flight B: Haliou picked up her fourth singles win of the tournament over Howard's Nadia Pegram (4-6, 6-2, 11-9) to win the flight final. She won her second consecutive super tiebreak to secure the first-place finish.

Flight C: Lawson defeated Iva Jankovic of Coppin in the consolation finals, 6-2, 6-3, to take home a third-place finish.

Sissi Axelsson got her first win as a Tiger over James Madison's Shannon McCarthy, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9).

Flight D: Pospischill finished second after she fell to Katarina Marinkovikj of George Washington in the flight final, 6-0, 6-3.

Rothfeld got the win over Delaware's Viva Laas (6-3, 5-7, 11-9) on the other side of the bracket to place third in her flight. With the win, Towson secured a perfect 5-0 record over the weekend against CAA foes.

Elessa Jacobs dropped a consolation match to Jackie Nannery of George Mason, 6-3, 6-1.

Flight F: In consolation competition, Nadeen Shrebati defeated the flight's No. 1 seed from Loyola, Bonnie Gruseck, 7-5, 6-1.

Doubles

Jacobs/Pospischill won a consolation match against Decker/Aguirre, 6-2.
