Men’s Golf Finishes In Fourth At Doc Gimmler

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Towson University men's golf team managed to hold onto their fourth-place spot as the Doc Gimmler tournament wraps up. After three rounds and 54 holes the team earned a combined score of 831 (-9), with two of the Tigers finishing the event in the top-25 individually. This performance also goes down in history as the Tigers fourth best ever tournament of all time in relation to par.

The field was neck and neck all throughout the two-day tournament, with the Tigers securing their fourth place spot by only one stroke. Connecticut, Lehigh and Columbia tied for fifth each earning team scores of 832 (-8). The next two teams, Lafayette College and Long Island University, finished right behind in eighth with scores of 833 (-7). Harvard won the tournament by one stroke over St. Johns with a score of 807 (-33).

"This was a really steady week for us," head coach Mike Larkin said. "We executed the game plan well and this should be our standard result when we don't get a lot out of it. When we play like this, our hot weeks will have us contending to win."

Jeremy Summerson had another solid performance after shooting a 69 for the final round, earning him a total score of 205 (-5). The senior ended up tied for 14th place among 86 competitors. This is quite an improvement from his results at last year's tournament where Summerson finished with a 217 (+7) on the same course.

Poonyapat Nantsupawat improved his second round performance by four strokes, shooting a 69 to conclude the tournament. Nantsupawat earned one bogey on hole eight, but for the other 17 holes he was par or better. Moving up by one spot from his standing yesterday, he finished tied for 22nd place.

Justin Griffith and Brad Riley both shot 71 for their final rounds. Combined the two earned five birdies during the final 18 holes. Griffith finished tied for 27th and Riley ended the tournament tied for 31st.

Julian Gonzalez bounced back from his first day performance after shooting a 70 for his final and best round. Gonzalez finished with a total score of 218 (+8) to round out the team.

"We really limited big mistakes dramatically compared to last week, which was exactly what we were trying to do," Larkin added. "So I'm proud of the guys."

A week from now the Black and Gold will return to action, attending the Hartford Hawk Invitational in South Kent, Connecticut from Sept. 19-20.
